A Rooster for Dawn

Last week I had to take Dawn to Albany to give her a Birds and Bees lesson on the differences between ”young chooks, hens, chickens, roosters and KFC.”

Albany is well known for the stray birdlife that people have dumped there. There are so many roosters and chickens walking around the shops and park, and we both had a good time chasing the birds and discovering the river at the back of the village.

This is a Rooster Dawn, a male adult chicken, and this is from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia:

A rooster or cock is a male chicken (Gallus gallus), the female being a hen. A young cock is also called a cockerel.

The term "rooster" is reputedly so used because the cock is said to roost over clutches of eggs to guard them. In fact, "roosting" is the action of perching aloft to sleep at night, and is done by both sexes.

The rooster is often pictured in art as crowing at the break of dawn. He can often be seen sitting on fence posts or other objects, where he crows to proclaim his territory. However, he will also crow during the rest of the day.

I hope that is all clear now Dawn!! :)))

Ha! Looks like you two had a bit of a chickenfest...

Good detail around the eyes and in the feathers...Rooster portraits don't come much better, from what I've seen of them! :-)

Nice one, well done!

Hi Jansje,

Early to beth and early to rise...
Good idea to wake up early to shoot a picture like this. A nice warm morning sun gives the extra colour to the pictures.
Well done,

TAKE CARE,

HENDRIK

Great picture and great notes. But I can still hardly differenciate a hen form a rooster.I looked in my dictionary and for me,if I look at the face, they almost look the same! Beautiful light and colors.Dawn's chicken is also very nice. But male, female, you got me! Anyway I was born mixed up! TFS!
