This is the Silver Fern

The silver fern is becoming increasingly recognised overseas as the national symbol of New Zealand. The iconic silver fern, from foetal koru to graceful frond, is a cornerstone of New Zealand culture — a symbol of national pride and as famous as the All Blacks, who wear the silver fern on their rugby shirts. The New Zealand Netball team is called "The Silver Ferns".

Yes, this is the Silver fern, but where's the silver?

It is on the underneath side of this attractive green frond!! This is the only tree fern with silver undersides to its fronds, making a spectacular sight in the moonlight.

When these fronds are laid silver side-up on the forest floor, they make ingenious track makers - a helpful pointer for trampers lost in the bush after dark.

So if you’re lost in a NZ bush remember to place these silver fern fronds like arrows asking for help. . .

Silver fern fronds were also traditionally preferred by Maori for comfortable mattresses, so if you're in the bush, lost and cold, also pick a few extra to sleep on for a comfy sleep while waiting for help to arrive. And cover yourself with the fronds - silver side up, so your saviours will see you when you're asleep!!

Dawn and I saw these beautiful ferns growing in Albany when we were there a few weeks back. See the brown fronds in the BG - well that's a dying frond of teh Silver Fern - even at that stage these fronds are beautiful.

I hope you enjoy looking at it as much as I do - Ferns are my most favourite plant, and that is one reason why I love going into our bushes and forests - to see the ferns that grown there.

Kia ora. . .

Nice one Janice, those fronds absolutely glow in thee sunlight.
The dying frond gives your image a nice balance.
Well done,
Peter.

Hello Janice !

A simply beautiful composition showing in one shot both stages i.e. Life and Death. No words needed.

Hi Janice!
Beautiful fern...Great light and DOF! Marta

Hi Janice! I love the pattern of the fern leaves and the vivid color green. I like the lighting and DOF. One of my fave food is the more edible fern w/ very small conical black snail w/ greenish meat cooked in coconut milk. Sooo yummmy! I promise!!! :)
TFS,
Freddie :)

Hi Janice,

Who needs Silver when there is Gold?

Hi Janice,

Wow! What a wonderful picture it is? You managed Colours, Lights very well. I like to see this valuable picture with removing bottom browned dry leaves.
Nice work.
