Chooks - Free to a Good Home

Albany Village is known for its free-range chicken population. Even though "It is prohibited to abandon chickens or to uplift them from this area" many have abandoned their chickens at Albany and they have just run riot.

This once quaint rural village at the northern end of Auckland's urban sprawl, Albany Village has for decades prided itself on its chooks that have wandered through the local park and businesses. They’ve even become a tourist attraction.

But now, the air in Albany has heating up over the suggestion that these chickens be moved out of the area.

The SPCA wants Albany Village’s chickens removed, saying letting them roam there is inhumane. They are totally opposed to the continued presence of chickens, free range or contained, in the public areas of Albany Village on humane grounds.

A group of people have been involved with re-homing the Albany chickens for three years, working with the council when numbers get too high. Since 2005, they have helped rehome about 800 surplus chickens.

But the former Albany Business Association president said that eradication is not the answer. "We’ve got history here."(!!!!!!!!!!!!)

This is some of their history:
Children have been seen attacking birds with pellet guns and catapults.
Others have chased them with sticks until their beaks hang open with stress, while their parents smile at the entertainment.
Chickens have been ripped apart by dogs; birds caught for use as eel bait and poached by people using baited fish hooks.
And entire families come to the village to capture the birds en masse for table food.

This is a photo I took of one of Albany’s older roosters last year. I don’t think he’s there now.

Once again your picture has amazing detail. In the Philippines I developed a real LOVE-HATE relationship with roosters :) They tend to start crowing at about one AM and I'm a very light sleeper. Now that I'm back home they are starting to look quite pretty again. TFS

Hi,
Great portrait. An important note.
Hoscakal.

Good morning ? Janice.
Hope you had a good sleep and didnot dreamed about Chicken.
Nice story you wrote.
Its like Venice and other towns having problems with the amount of doves.
But eh... dont they eat chicken in NZ ? Either the eggs ?
Think, these free ones tast better than our locked up ones.
Have a nice day.
Jan

Nice history... we have a small animal park where the peacocks run free and I have seen kids chasing them to grab a feather and the parents laughing.. I get so mad and do not hold back! lol

Hello Janice. Nice mugshot in superb sharpness and vivid details. I like the plumage exposed here. Well done and best regards. Jusni

Hi Janice,
We are having a problem with 'free range' chickens in one of our parks, they escaped during Katrina and have grown in number since.
I imagine the smell and amount of their liter must be a problem too, it can't be healthy!
Beautiful colors, vivid details in this image, great crop. TFS

Hi Janice,I guess the town must be over populated for them to
become such a problem, you need a Solomon amongst the council members I think.
Image is so sharp & the capture of the feathers details and colors of the rooster is perfect.

Ron

love the softy colours, the sahrp details, he really looks majestuous with his blood red crown, great shot!

sad history, but a great close up from a proud animal, we have a rooster and he owns a few females ;-) they are pleasant company and big beggers for food, i like them, but can imagen the problem when there are to many, especially in the spring and summer when the roosters are agressive to protect there woman, nevertheless a very sharp and fine portrait. kind regards Joke
