Bumble Bee on a Cosmos Flower

Unlike the honey bee the humble Bumble Bee is gentle and slow. As she trundles around the garden collecting pollen and nectar she is quite different to her streamlined relative who dashes about everywhere. Even her body shape is different. The Bumble Bee is round and furry and not at all like her more wasp shaped cousin. Only the Queen and the worker bees have a sting.

Spanish priests grew Cosmos flowers in their mission gardens in Mexico. The evenly placed petals led them to christen the flower Cosmos, the Greek word for harmony or ordered universe. Cosmos, like many of our warm weather annuals such as marigolds, originated in Mexico and South America.

Cosmos belongs to that vast family of plants known as Compositae. Although there are 20 known species of cosmos, two annual species, Cosmos sulphureus and Cosmos bipennatus, are most familiar to home gardeners

I was in Auckland City on New Years Day and found this busy BB in a colourful garden full of the Cosmos flowers in Albert Park in Auckland City and it is quite a while since I had seen any flying around where I live. I was beginning to think that they had completely disappeared.

Anyhow, here is a bright happy summery flower to cheer you all you folk up there in the Northern Hemisphere - our gardens are full of these wonderful flowers right now ‘Down Under”.

So ENJOY this flower and its visitor

the colors and sunshine (compared to our grey & wet)caught my attention, but the detail you captured on the BBees wings is great.
Question? my wife and I are wondering what is that in the bottom left section?

Hi Janice,
Its obvious you are in an other season as I am here in the Netherlands. You cheer me up with vibrant colours of this nice Cosmos flower and a busy bumblebee. Thanks for the gift my dear Janice!
Hans

Hi Janice. Looking at that BB it seems to be a fair bit smaller than the variety we have here. The 'cosmos' is another flower I haven't seen much here and yet they grow like weeds in sandy, dry Western Australia. A lovely composition with good natural colours and fine detail. TFS,
David

Many thanks for your comment on ' Tamar Tranquillity IV’

Stunning close up. I love them especially the nearly maroon ones. My mom planted some at one stage and they are just resurfacing every summer. Here they are actually seen as a weed. Grows everywhere next to the roads and in the fields. I see it is your birthday. Hope it was a wonderful day.

Happy B'day to you Janice. I hope you had a wonderful day. Clever what both Dawn and you do.. B'day on the same day.. a party at Mc Donalds with shared costs *_^
Gaian congratulations from Montreal and a big hug,
John
