Smokers Corner at Aotea Square

More photos from Aotea Square, regarded as the centre of the city of Auckland City, New Zealand. Officially opened in 1979, it is used as the site for open-air concerts and gatherings, as well as markets open every Friday and Saturday.

I think this must be the Smokers Corner. The man with the tripod looked very official, and I did take a photo or two of him filming the Joker doing his tricks.

The name of the square is derived from Motu Aotea, the Māori name for Great Barrier Island, which is the largest offshore island of New Zealand and located approximately 90km from downtown Auckland.

This is another photo of the locals watching the Open Air concert that was amusing many of the onlookers.

Dawn, Sweety and I spent a while there taking photos and enjoying the concert too. But we weren't smoking!

Rules about smoking in NZ:
• the buildings and grounds of schools and early childhood centres became smokefree from 1 January 2004
• licensed premises (bars, restaurants, cafes, sports clubs, casinos) became smokefree indoors from 10 December 2004
• other workplaces became smokefree indoors from 10 December 2004 – including offices, factories, warehouses, work canteens and ‘smoko’ rooms
• the display of tobacco products in retail outlets was restricted, and a ‘smoking kills’ sign erected near the display from 10 December 2004
• herbal smoking products were included in smoking bans

This is a very strong picture of real life in many places now. Smokers are no longer welcome indoors anywhere in Canada and may even be asked to leave outdoor venues in some areas.
Superb capture of the many expressions on this tight little gathering

Hello Janice,

You have captured an interesting moment where three ladies are having cigarettes in their fingers. Its a pitty to see the smokers at public places anf they are isolated (which is good to discourage smoking) and at some airports they are caged in a glass room.....

Beautiful expressive shot with fine details and nice luminosity. Excellent shot, well done. Thanks for sahring this.

Hello Janice.
Nice streetlive scene. Nowadays there are more girls/women who smoke, than man.

Janice,
I like shots that show real life such as this although it is sad to see the girls smoking since it is so harmful to the body. When I see shot like this I wonder what the conversation consists of. Interesting! God's best my friend!

Hi Janice,
Good social commentary shot, seems more women than men smoke nowdays. Why, I cannot figure.
Did you make an offer on the tripod?
Peter.

Hi Janice, the rules are pretty much the same here but ours didn't come into effect in hotels until January this year. A good street scene with fine colour and detail. TFS,
David
