The New Zealand Christmas Tree –
Pohutukawa – Po-hoo-ta-car-wa (Metrosideros excelsa)

This picture shows you the rough life some of these Pohutukawa trees have to go through. When the tide is in this tree is standing in the water. Its roots are still attached to the cliff behind, but as you can see, the cliff has fallen away into the sea and all that is left is the roots, still living.

Some of the plant has also died, but the tree keeps on going. Children love to play on these trees at the beaches, and as you can see in this shot, it gets plenty of use as a play thing.

Pohutukawa is very much a coastal tree; they thrive near the sea, easily withstanding strong wind, salt spray and drought and are rarely found inland unless planted. The tree hardly ever grows straight and is more likely to have many short trunks with tortuous branches. Usually found growing on cliffs with the branches sometimes reaching in the water, as seen here, (occasionally even found with oysters growing on the branches) and the great roots spread along the cliff-face above.

Another great shot of a Po-hoo-ta-car-wa ;)
Well done.

I Janice!! You've brought us another wonder from New Zealand! It's a fantastic tree no doubt. Well seen! Also thanks for the very informative note, we're always learning new things from your notes :-)
I am out of points, but I'll add them later. I did a little workshop for you... I hope you don't be mad!

Who needs a McDonald's playland when you can climb a Pohutukawa, eh Janice?! Nicely seen and captured. I love the bright colors of the children's clothes. Good job!

God's best always,

Tim

This is a very interesting tree and I love the children playing in it. Nice happy shot.

A true plain of plays for children, and really not expensive!!! What a joy this tree, a joy which you knew to feel very well and collect! Bravo Janice!
Claude

Its a good composition and also a very interesting post.
Yes a bit of contrast is missing but this does change the pleasure to see this tortured tree, a very good place to play for the kids.
I like it

Great to see something from you again Janice.

This is very nice. I like seeing the fisherman behind the children.

Thank you for the knowledge about these great trees. I didn't actualy know they are coastal lovers. As I grew up way inland, so had never known it. But I guess I did know that they had always been planted where they are rather than self sown...

Hope you are enjoying the end of your summer for me Janice. Is now real winter here -7 to -15 with lots of snow.

*(Oh that's right have run out of points for an hour or two... like Swarzenagger "I'll be back!") And I did! With a workshop for you...
