End of the day, at Army Bay, Whangaparaoa Peninsula..about a 6 min car ride from my house at the end of the Whangaparaoa Peninsula you will find Army Bay.. I enjoyed taking photos in the late afternoon here.

For those who like to read and learn more: A little history about the area:

In early 1942 the outcome of World War II was in balance. There was widespread fear that New Zealand would be invaded by the Japanese, and the port of Auckland was considered to be the most likely target. Machine gun emplacements (pillboxes), barbed wire entanglements, and anti-tank obstacles were frantically constructed to protect potential landing beaches, and ditches were also dug to impede the passage of tracked vehicles in most regions.

At Whangaparaoa a range of anti-invasion defences were constructed to prevent enemy forces from landing at Army Bay and attacking the heavy coast defence gun batteries at the end of the peninsula. These perimeter defences included 11 pillboxes, searchlights, electrified barbed wire entanglements, and an anti-tank ditch.

Fortunately, the Japanese forces were defeated in the Pacific and never reached New Zealand shores, so our anti-invasion defences were never tested in action. Most anti-tank ditches were infilled soon after the threat of invasion subsided, and many pillboxes and other defences in the Auckland region have been destroyed by development or coastal erosion over the last 50 years.

And some more interesting tit bits, I found:

Did you know that during World War II:

- At least three enemy submarines (one German, two Japanese), visited the Auckland area;

- A floatplane launched from a Japanese submarine flew over Auckland, but saw no shipping worth sinking and returned to the sub;

- The crew of a German sub claimed to have come ashore and milked a cow;

- A German navy vessel laid floating mines in the Hauraki Gulf which later sank two ships;

- New Zealand tried to develop its own weapon of mass destruction, a tsunami bomb, at Whangaparaoa.

From Dawn a Dusk:) lovely image Dawn, perfect exposure of the reflected light on the water. Sharp silouette of the tree, and the seagull adds interest.

Hey! That's MY Pohutukawa tree!! I've taken heaps of photos of that tree - and it looks so good in this lighting. I like how the seagull looks like he is going to land on it.

Hi Dawn ,
Fantastic place!Great scenery!
Beautiful colours combination!
Very good work!

Petar

Hi Dawn,
So that is why it's called Army Bay - love that atmosphere - yes I see that you had to drive for 6 whole minutes, but that really is not a bad thing.
If the pillboxes are the same things we call bunkers then we have in the dunes a lot of them - however they are not removed they are turned into holiday"homes" and the irony is that the Germans who build them in our dunes to defent against England, are the ones now occupying them when visiting our country in summertime - bizar if you think about it.
Good composition - of course there has to be a seagull and the colour in the sky you can only catch for a short while - creates an excellent atmosphere. Yes I can see why you enjoy it,
TFS

Perfect!
The composition is matchless, the colours and details spot-on and the mood just what I need at the end of this frantically busy week.
May I have your permission to use this as a desktop background for a little while please?
