Clematis

There are so many different Clematis plants for sale now.

The American pronunciation is CLEM-uh-tis.
In New Zealand we say cli-MAY-tis
Naturally NZ’s pronunciation is correct!!

In NZ we have a few native Clematis too. They are very popular in our gardens.

Clematis, once well-planted and nurtured, will grow and flower with increasing vigour each year - like most trees, the older a Clematis gets, the better it looks.

The genus belongs to the family Ranunculaceae, along with such other varied plants such as Aquilegia, Delphinium and Thalictrum. Both Buttercups and Clematis are poisonous.

The two characteristics mostly associated with clematis are their habit of climbing (though by no means all species do so) and their beautiful flowers. The ability to climb gives the genus its name, which is derived from the Greek klema, a vine-branch or twig.

This flower here is one of the large flowering clematis hybrids, and are easily recognised for their large, very often double, flowers. They are the result of the repeated crossings of wild species clematis introduced from China and Japan many years ago.

Hi Janice, very nice shot of this clematis. Interesting two-toned color, and nicely composed.
By the way, most people around here pronounce it Cle-MA-tis.
Trudy
P.S. Funny story about the pronunciation. I worked in a garden center for a long time, and over the years we heard many interesting/hilarious plant name pronunciations from our customers. One day a man approached me and asked if I had anything that spread quickly other than chlamydia!!!! I knew what he meant of course, so we carried on, but I'm pretty sure he never realized what he said. If he did, he never let on!

Just 'Clematus', in Holland. Why so difficult, haha
Perfect sharp close up of this lovely flower, Janice.
The composition is superb, aswell the colours.

Hello Janice,

A nicely cropped macro of the clematis flower showing excellent textural details and colours. The off-centre composition is a plus.

Kind regards,

Hi Janice,
Missed this posting....great one. Superb sharp and the of centre creates a well balanced compositon. The details of the clematis is quite inspiring.

Very good focus, DOF and contrast. I like the way you've used the golden rule (commonly referred to as the rule of thirds) to place the flower core. It also creates interesting angles in the petals along with the rhythms of radial repetition. It has a regal appearance. Good work!
