~ New Zealand Flax ~

The New Zealand flax (syn. Phormium tenax) has long strap-like leaves which comprises a white fibre strong enough to be of value in the textile industry.

The leaves may be weaved into a meshwork, a skill used by Maori people for hundreds of years.

In this composition I have added a typical plait. Flax is found all over New Zealand. Nowadays there are many cultivars found in gardens around the world. I took this photo on Tiritiri Matangi island located 4km from the end of Whangaparaoa Peninsula, north of Auckland.

impressive and beautiful presentation.. I love the droplets of water falling from the branch slowly, and you managed to stop it:)lovely colors, exposure and frame..
congrats and my compliments Martyn

Hi Martyn, love this shot.
NZ flax has become popular here recently, but of course is only grown as an annual - they would never survive our harsh winters. Because of their large strappy leaves, you often see them used in large containers, like on street boulevards and that sort of thing. I've never seen them bloom, because they simply aren't alive long enough in these parts!!
So thanks for showing me this!
Trudy
