Whistling Death
 |
|
| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
The Vought F4U Corsair. Called the "whistling death" by the Japanese during WWII because the air intakes on the wings make a distinctive whistling sound under the right circumstances. The Corsair had a 11:1 kill ratio in the U.S. Navy.
It was also the first production aircraft to exceed 400mph in level flight.
You may wonder why it has "bent" wings - this is because the 18 cylinder engine needed a large prop to absorb its power, but by the time the landing gear was long enough to give prop clearance, it wasn't very strong. So they gave it bent wings, which meant a big prop and stout landing gear could be used.
This has to be one of my favourite aircraft. I hope you enjoy the photo =) |

Cadi,
Magnificent shot! I missed the morning events, and you got lucky.
Really powerful looking machines. They seem to be all engine.

Dennis

Hi Cadi,
Beautiful detail captured here, well done, nicely framed too.
One tiny thing....the props stopped, and the Corsair ain't no glider, pardon the bad grammar ;)
Those old radial engines didn't rev very highly, 1/250th sec would give you a nice blur to the prop.
Cheers,
Pete.
Hi Cadi,
My favorite prop plane! Excellent capture in flight. Try next time to lower the shutter speed to create some motion blur of the propellor, it creates a more dram, atic effect. Nevertheless an excellent action shot of the distinctive F4U!
