[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
One of the RNZAF Huey's with purple smoke trail at the Whenuapai Air show.

They are undoubtably the most famous helicopter in the world, also known the Bell UH-1 Iroquois. The Huey, which first flew in 1956, serves in the militaries of many nations and will continue to do so for many years to come.

The Huey has several distinctive characteristics, including its rounded nose, its twin-bladed rotor, and the loud "whomp whomp" sound it makes in flight. It is a particularly noisy helicopter because, when in forward flight, the tip of the advancing rotor blade breaks the speed of sound, creating a small sonic boom.

Hi Dennis,
Good to see another shot from the air show. Nice work with this one, well composed. I like the angled perspective with this photo, the smoke trail coming from the back of the chopper looks great too. I've heard these before and they definitely are loud, thanks for the info in your note. Makes alot of sense why.

TFS,
Scott.

So THAT'S why they're so noisy...very interesting note! I like the composition, the purple smoke against the cloud is very effective. Nice and sharp, well exposed. Well done!

Nice angle capture Dennis, I can imagine the thunderous noise it made as the blades cut through the air

Nice action photo Dennis, great timing to get the rotors at right angles to the fuselage.
The Iroquois can look odd when the rotors are fore and aft.
There is no way they can sneak up on you eh?
Pete.

Terrific shot! A powerful sense of drama and motion in this shot. Good cropping and framing - and I do like your note regarding the sound of those things, it certainly is distinctive.

Another great airshow shot, the angle is dramatic and the chopper is well composed against the clouds.

Wow what a great photo Dennis.. love that smoke coming from it..and your composition of this one... yes they certainly make that whomp whomp sound, that always makes you aware of them... they kind of give me the creeps in a way...for some reason..big chunky things flying around..I didnt know about that small sonic boom..interesting notes.

Cheers
Dawn
