[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
I took this shot last Sunday from the Britomart railway station in the heart of Auckland City. Being a Sunday there was virtually nobody around, which gave me plenty of space to set up the tripod and start shooting. I was told by a fellow photographer that the security guards there don’t like people using tripods as they associate it with commercial photography, but nobody bothered to tap me on the shoulder so I just kept on clicking.

This POV looks towards the left side of the station, with the brightly coloured walls (lighting effect) stretching into the distance. I tried a couple of ways to crop this photo, but decided that this way worked the best. Due to the low lighting, I had to use a shutter speed as long as 30-seconds in some places. Fortunately nobody walked in front of me while the shutter was open.

Britomart is the largest infrastructure project ever undertaken by a local authority in New Zealand, at a total cost of $204 million, and stretches over five hectares. It is a transport centre linking train, bus and ferry services and is an important component in developing Auckland's passenger transport network. It is also one of the few underground railway stations in the world where diesel motive power is used.

It’s quite a futuristic looking building inside, and is full of photo opportunities. Looking forward to going back on another Sunday sometime, as there are still plenty of photos that I would like to take. You have to pay for parking around there though, even on a Sunday, so the best idea is to park down the road at the Foodtown supermarket ;).

Nice angle Scott, well shot, great colours and clarity, HDR works well here (looking on my work laptop screen) i'll take another squizz later on my larger external monitor

Hi Scott,

Effective POV used here. I like the different lighting and colours. Awesome! TFS.

Hello Scott,

I have never ever seen a railway station so empty!
What an opportunity!
Your positioning is exact to gain the very best from the receding lines. The viewer moves into the tunnel with the speed of a train!
The colours are a wonderful addition, adding a softer more artistic ambience.

It might be interesting to take another shot with people around to see how it affects the 'atmosphere' and your approach to photographing it.

Have a good day,
Bev :-)

Bonjour Scott

Superbe !
Belle perspective avec de beaux reflets et couleurs

This is a beautiful image and I like the stillness and absence of people. I agree with Bev thoughts about another version including people to observe the impact.

Hello Scott
Such a lot of detail here, yet it’s not distracting. The receding lines are very well placed, and I particularly like the abundance of reflected light, on the sleepers and on the stainless steel pillars on the platform. You were lucky to get such a clear view.
Regards, Les

hi scott
you really have the HDR honed to a tee, great clolourful image excellent perspective looking down the track and the stop light at the tunnel.

Salut Scott.
Un train révolutionnaire mais aussi des couleurs révolutionnaires dans cette galerie souterraine.
Belle image parfaitement maîtrisée.
Bonne journée.

Hi Scott,

I like the abstract paintings on the left side of the track it makes the stones a little luminescent. Nice angle of pov great colours and the lighting is superb you have also caught the reflections of colour on the pillars tfs.

Jon

Hello, Scott -
Outstanding combination of intriguing graphics and colors. Perfect POV to show the lines in diminishing persepctive. I particularly like the reflected colors of the lights on the chrome columns opposite. The details are all very sharp. Great eye to see and capture this one.

I love your processing Scott! It's amazing! The colors are so bright! Your sharpness is just amazing. Your crop is good, I like the perspective going off center! Nice work!

Love this kind of abstract-y graphic shot Scott.. fantastic lights on the left wall .. which are reflected on the shiny tracks, on the shiny concrete floor, and on the columns right! And the two red lights in the tunnel are a perfect addition. Fastastic idea to shoot this .. VERY well done mate.
Have a nice weekend
Trudy

Hi Scott,

You've posted a lot of amazing shots, but this is definitely one of your best. The colors and numerous reflections are outstanding. The repetition of the arches, posts and rail ties is well seen from this POV. A really superb job! Have a great weekend.

Werner

hi Scott,
an illusionary flat rainbow under the ground.
it is an artistic result you realized from your interesting experiment,
shining panels on the wall and those reflections both on the rails and the columns make beautiful fantastic perspective.
if there walked someone, maybe his image would be like ghost in 30sec.
anyway near future we will have organic EL display panels, perhaps the ambience of those lights is like this.
thank you for your excellent shot,
Akihisa

Nice treatment of this subject, with good capture of those coloured lights and nice placement of the vanishing point - I've ridden many times on trains out of that station and never get tired of the journey.

Hi Scott,
here's where the learning process comes in,I take it this is an HDR image, but I am at a loss of understanding the Shutter speeds of 3.s,0.8secs,&13s would you be as kind as to explain same please?
The image is dynamic & vibrant. The colours & reflections are so detailed & sharp.I like how your POV gives us several subjects that lead the eye right into the image, from the lit walls to the gravel & rail tracks, then to the platform with the metal colums which reflect the light from the back walls & then the ceiling archway & lights converge as one to the tunnel, well thought out & captured.

Must have been one of the days when the trains weren't running.

HDR works well on this, not overdone. The colours are well defined. The Point of Veiw leading to the vanishing point is great. Even managed the star effect on the traffic lights in the distance.

Oh, Scott,
there are SO many cool things in this shot. Colors, curves, lines, angles.... I love the kind of metallic look and those wonderful colors. The perspective is brilliant, I love all the contrasting lines, great composition, great lighting, superb sharpness and detail. This is a fabulous shot! Many thanks and warm regards,

hi dear Scott....

this is like out of space and out of this world presentation... remarkable again.. the lines pull the attention straight to the end, to the little red stars at the end of that tunnel:)what a perspective and POV..I so like the reflection of colored lights on the railway and the big columns.. superb, all is super superb..

have a great day my friend

Very futuristic looking shot I love the chrome and different coloured lighting The diagonals all work to lead the eye into the tunnel Nice work
Warm regards

Hi Scott!

I took a quick look at your gallery before going to work and found I really have a lot to learn about HDR (witch I already knew), but now I also know where to start, also by looking at your shots of this type and by your detailed suggestions you gave me.
Why I chose this shot to comment is the station being so clean and peaceful; you never see something like this in Hungary. Even on Sunday people do use transportation here.
I think you found the right pov, it makes the shot geometrically harmonic witch had to come naturally as the scene does not have an evident line of reference.
It's fantastic that your hdrs don't look so artificial, I hope I can get such a decent output once :)
I'm using a free sw witch has 4-5 different algorithms for making hdr and the same amount for tone mapping so my next thing to do will be to try these out and learn how they work.
I especially like those colorful reflections you presented so well in your picture. TFS!

Best regards,
Andor

Hi Scott
I m very surprised to see a so nice and clear metro stop!

good capture for pov and colours

The crop is perfect. The fact that you have the large section of wall to the left of the vanishing point accentuates the idea that the railway line just keeps going. Loving the lights reflecting on the metal pillars. Very good idea and well executed!
