| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
My first night shoot, of Orakei Pier, near Mission Bay, in Auckland. The shot is also looking towards Devonport, & North Head. I'm still getting used to night shooting, etc, but am enjoying the learning curve, & can only get better, with mileage, & is a part of photography I have a better appreciation for... All feedback, etc, is appreciated!

Hi Cris,
Nice photo, I went here the other week in the day-time but it was closed due to maintenance. Looks much better at night, a shame they didn't have the lights on though. Good use of the available lighting, couldn't have been easy. The distant reflections look awesome, good POV of the pier too.
The only thing I'd do here is straighten the photo by rotating it to the left a bit. The darkness seems to disguise the crookedness, but it's just something I noticed. Nice work though.
TFS,
Scott.
HI Cris,
Impressive first nocturnal photograph. Well done! I like your POV with the lights on the North Shore in the distance. Awesome sharpness and the reflections are impressive.

Martyn
superbe reflet...
un jour j'aimerais savoir faire ces photos de nuit...

Hi Cris,
I do find that the problem here is not exposure, but more "file size!" If you want to get the best of your camera possibility, I would recommend that you keep it under the best jpg quality (higher resolution) available, if not raw *althought I rarely shoot in raw..))) for numerous reason....that I'm not going to get into right now.
66k is just to small of a file, and is the cause of lack of definition, as you can see, your sky appears in "stripe" and not a smooth blend of tones. The horizon line is tilted. The overall exposure seem good, althought your exposure exif seem false. f/4 at 15sec (200asa). This shot would be way over exposed. So your data can't be right, just impossible...)))
Not a bad composible, and certainly a good attempt at night photography..))))
Keep on shooting...)))
Hello Cris
Welcome to TL firstly and carry on practicing with the night photography, a hard skill at first but once mastered it can be a joy to shoot these scenes. I love the warm tones in this with superb reflections from the pier and lights especially the bridge to the left. Slight tilt easily fixed while the stars in the sky are a bonus. You may also want to try blue hour before it gets really dark as this really is a fantastic hour also.
Regards
Jim
