This is a black and white I shot on FILM about fifteen years ago. I experimented with hand colouring, using lacquer paints mixed with clear coat.
I coloured the flax and the Tiki's paua shell eyes.
I used this afternoons sun to light the print and shot it.
Tiki is the maori figure, and most of the world know 'paua' as abalone. Paua is pronounced Par-Wah.
The carved panel decorates a wall of the University of Auckland.
I'm not sure if the building still exists, a motorway has been built through that area.
I've posted a close-up in the workshop to show the amount of detail in the carving. |

Hi Pete
I love how you have coloured this! The frame is great as well.
What a lovely image also, I love Māori carvings and the tiki is one of my favourites.
Thanks for joining the theme
regards
Tracey
Hello Peter,
This is like a etching from an old book.
Your pp work really has had the desired effect in that it highlights the fine detailed carving.
I like this very much.
Well done.
Kind regards,
Bev :-)

Hi Pete, it is a well made carving - lots of work put into the details.
I like how you have coloured it, and the Pah-wah makes the brown Maori eyes looks look very blue!!
Well done
Janice
