More trial (and error?) with Susie as guinea-pig for my super-budget lighting setup.

2x 500w halogens softened with a translucent umbrella to the left. Another 500w halogen bounced off a whiteboard (from a stationery shop) to the right. A 60w lamp on the dresser behind Susie.

The pose was more contrived, here - right down to the choice of book. :)

Any feedback, suggestions or criticisms much appreciated.

Oh my...Rew... paying big bulks now? Wooooo.... AWESOME!!! I like this one, is very different from the rest of your photos... she seem very natural, didn't have any feeling of she is posting for ya.... excellent lighting, no no no, I should said SUPERB lighting... you have show off her face very well, especially her lips and her nose, even the colours her skin tone. It draws all my attention to study it, it is so natural my friend, awesome job you have done. :D 11 out of 10 from me!!!

Cheers,
Sweety

There's Susie!!! Great shot with very nice detail, it's so clean and sharp. She really looks focused on the book, but you can tell by her posture that she is shy and somewhat introverted as well (though I know the two things are not the same). Very good composition with her torso and head at the side, and the bent knees and hands demanding focus too, which leads the eye around the photo. The background chosen as well as the lighting suits this perfectly. Very nice portrait, TFS!

Hi Rew,
A rather natural portrait, with a fine background... Well done! Did you choose yourself Oscar Wilde?
Mary

Also for me, the composition is great.
And thanks for the details about lighning you mentioned. It's useful.

Excellent but perhaps a bit too much excellence.
Alfred

Hello Rew, you did a great model shoot with the light very well balanced and controlled. My only suggestion would be to clone out the shadow on the lighter shade of grey in the bg.

But the rest is perfect. Also the choice for the continuing colour of grey in different tones and materials. The only different colour being the cream camisole. I can almost feel the texture.

Great sharpness and very natural colour.
Love the small book. Very well done! Yan :)

Very good portrait Rew. Excellent composition and colour presentation. Very well done. TFS. Stev

Very nicely captured! The light behind her bugs me but she definatly stands out in photos. Beautiful a great pov! TFS another great one!
Christan

can't resist an impression Susie is not really reading, she is only posing; nonetheless - to me - photo almost as good as the former one; Susie is a great model - congratulations, Tom

Hi mate

Like me or hate me.

That light behind her head is disturbing, It would have been perfect had it been shining on the whole of the background making her actually standing out (almost 3D type of effect, and it looks possible with your lighting from the other lamps you have used, they by the way are perfect to me)

Her pose is stunning but your cropping or composing of the shot seems off to me. I would have liked to have been able to have seen her full body.

P.S. The lighting I really do love though, along with her pose.

Cheers mate
Clint

Hey, Rew. Nice to see you working some more with Susie. Maybe you'll start her on a career as a model. (Another site I sometimes post to had a contest for the theme "Women with Books"; this would have been perfect.) From my point of view the positives of this shot are the pose, which is different and intersting. (And good choice of literature. Oscar Wilde once said that, "Every portrait that is painted with feeling is a portrait of the artist, not of the sitter." So we shall consider this as much about you as about Susie.) The texture of the light and show behind her is really nice as well, but I think I would have cropped/framed down closer to the top of her head. As always, the skin tone, color and sharpness look really good to me. My only big complaint it the expression on her face. To me, she seems frozen, posing, not really reading. Her eyes don't seem focused on the text. Just something a little unnatural is coming through in her relationship to the book. It's a small point, and hard to deal with, and, in any case, others will have a different opinion, but it strikes me. (Have you considered this kind of pose in a realistic setting? Like leaning against a bookshelf?) Oscar Wilde also said "Consistency is the last refuge of the unimaginative." So you can definitely count yourself among the imaginative, I think, Rew. Thanks for sharing more of your excellent work. Best, Hugh

Guinea-pig is maybe the wrong joice of words. You seem to know what you are doing, and this pose proves it. Very nice portrait, and the book is a nice touch as a prop and item of interest together with the model (who chose the title, you or her?).
Cheers
Otto

The mood is definitely improving, I like the slightly open lips and the stare at the book. And she looks more comfortable.... Your next post is number 100?

Put a stunner there for the 100 up!

Hi Rew !

Rew

This is my favourite of the three photos you've published so far of Susie - I like the way you can see her eyes in this one, and that she seems engaged in something other than modelling. I like the lighting and especially the highlight on the backdrop behind her hair - it quite handily prevents her hair from being lost against the background.

Hello Rew,
Susie learns the French ? If yes she little cross his holidays, to me the door is opened for her... Charming Photo …
Bravo

Hi Rew, looking at your gallery and found this, I am very interesting to lear more about studio lighting. To be honest, I have no clue at all and that's why through this TL I would like to learn more about it. I am really enjoying your work and style and some of them has inspired me.

Now the critique part : The model posed very well, very natural. Skin tone is perfect. The lighting I think a little bit, just a little bit hard in her hand and shoulder (but again I don't know if this has to be as it is in studio lighting) and a little black curve at the left upper corner, I wish it was not there

Keep the best work my friend, cheers, ari

Well done with this one.. the light behind her is a little annoying at first glance but in the long run it is being outrunned by the model and extra with the book she is reading.

TFS.
