Don't need to tell you but I will anyways... Absolutely stunning picture. Gorgeous eyes and the pov is amazing. My words are gone, but gorgeous. TFS

Yes Rew, great shot, nice composition. The eyes say she's smiling (I think!) but it's always hard to tell, that's women for ya!
Good skin tones, all looks really natural.
TFS, Neil.
Hi Rew,
Well if she had a hang-over I certainly cant tell, her eyes are quite lucid and they don't seem to have bag beneath them either. :P Wonderful use of focus, the soft out of focus background really accents her sharp features. And I love the natural skin tone with the subtle freckles... very nice.
Wonderful portrait, good thing she showed up! :)
Biance.
Stunning work Rew...Lovely sharpness, and clarity, and fine composition.
Portraits a mystic mood..
Well done.
Cheers Dawn.
p.s. hope you enjoyed your time in Mechanics Bay, with the arrival of QM2... it sure was busy wasnt it!
This is beautiful Rev. A lesson in taking a good portrait. So well balanced - emotive and of course what an amazing use pf light. I really wonder if we are using the same camera!
Take care

Excellent sense of textures with the good detail and clarity. You used the lighting well as it is caught beautifully in her eyes. Strong composition with her face taking up two-thirds from the right side and excellent contrast between the white veil and the dark-charcoal background. The cropping on all sides is just perfect. I think it's a little strange and funny ;P that she's in a modest white veil covering her mouth even though she's hung over. Ha! Great shot, TFS!

Well, Rew, if I could look like that with a hangover, that would be great! As you noted the WB is just slightly off as the bottom fabric's lines aren't as nice as the top's. Beautiful, it's the eyes...the ayes have it! Nice bg blur, too, and good choice.
hi rew,
if i am not mistaken, this is a 6x8 crop right?
well, whatever it is, its perfect for this photo! i like the white scarf, and u were right, the masked face technique really works!
panasonic cameras have leica lenses on them, and with this photo, we can see just how good those lenses really are!
from the saturation of the colors to the expression of the subject, everything about this photo is Just Too Good :)
thanks for sharing..

Stunning portrait Rew! Super detail, good job in handling the whites and the skin hasn't been PS'ed to death which I really like. I wish the shadow by the right eye wasn't there but....she has beautiful eyes and you captured them very well.
Lyndon

Hello Rew, A very impressive shot, I like the composition, sharpness and contrast. If I had one criticism it would be the shadow cast by the hair on the right eye. I wish my eyes were that bright the morning after the night before.
Well done, Regards, Roger.
Good mystery portrait, nice idea with the shawl and letting the eyes express the mood.
Cheers
Otto
Hi Rew,
Great portrait! Natural beaty I took, I like this. Good composition and framing.

Nice one, Rew. All good. Can't think of a thing to say. Impossible, but true. (Well, Roger's right about the shadow, I think, but I didn't even notice till I read his remark.) Maybe I would have pulled the veil up about a centimeter over the tip of her nose. The background really seems to compliment the color of her eyes. Good confident work. -Hugh

Ah Ha..wonderful portrait. Liked the way you captured eyes. Addint to my favorite. :) Vandana
Hi Rew,
Nice lightning on your model's face and eyes, even if I would have better seen less of the scarf...
Jules sounds so strange a name for a girl to me (in French, a "jules" is an equivalence for man or boyfriend...)...it adds some unexspected charm...
Mary
I love those eyes. Not so much about the skin though. maybe surface blur a little. But thats just me. =) too much preckels?
But the eyes.... WOW.
TFS.
Very clean and sharp portrait Rew. I like the B&W outfit and crop.TFS
Hi Rew,
you caught the right moment as she is shinning positive waves full of promiss, play and power. Technically wonderful, sharp and catching. Great framing accenting the B&W in color setting. Thanks to you and to Jules.
Petr
Hi Rew,
I like very much the way the white scarf and the dark hair are composing a frame within the frame.
I'm just beginning to learn about portraying thanks to beautiful posts like this one... and all I can say for sure now is that I'm in love with Julie's smiling eyes!

Hi Rew
This is a nice early and open portrait.

Hi Rew
Now that is a nice light setup you have. And thanks for the link, much appreciated.
This is a very nice photo, the model seems to still be thinking, how did last night happen!, Her eyes are very far away.....(*_*) I know how she might have felt on a couple of occations... Did she sweat it out under those spot lights..Ha ha ha.
The only criticism I have is the veil over her face. The part going over her nose should have been a little lower to see her nose or a little higher, it seems to be just at the wrong spot, for me that is.

Hi Rew,

Excellent portrait with good use of light as usual. Nice skin tone present here and good details. Balance of light here is just superb.

Good shot Rew, as the number of points attests.
My only niggle, would be the left (our) hand side of the face is sharper than the right. If you are using the camera at large apertures it becomes more important to get the focus point spot on, i use one point focusing and focus on the eyes.
You also have to be careful that the camera is on an even plane to the subject.
If you do want differential focusing then as a rule of thumb it should be the leading eye( one nearest the viewer) that is sharp. That can look creative, the other way around ( like you have it) and it generally looks like bad focusing.
The catchlights look very small and mean, this suggests you have the lights too far away.Bring them nearer and diffuse them more,or use a smaller aperture or faster shutter speed.
Another benefit of having the light nearer is that it is softer, rule: the bigger the light the softer it is. A soft light is much more flattering for potraits, especially women.

Hi Rew,

Hey, Rew,
I am such a huge fan of portrait photograhy and it is a joy to look over your gallery. For being hungover, she sure looks good. The light and color is wonderful and I love the way you only shot her eyes. But damn, man, don't you know any chubby, plain women?? If you could do THOSE and make them look this good, I really WOULD think you were a genius. rotfl... Many thanks,
Shelly
