I took this photo when I drove out to Piha Beach yesterday. I decided to climb up the iconic Lion Rock to see the picturesque views over each side of the beach. Being a Sunday, there were quite a few people wandering the shoreline, swimming and surfing. Unfortunately you aren’t allowed to go to the very top of Lion Rock anymore due to landslides and unstable rocks, but I did manage to climb a little bit higher than you’re supposed to so I could get an unobstructed view.

Piha is a well known black sand beach and Lion Rock receives its name from its shape when viewed from the rear - a large full maned male lion with front legs outstretched. It is a natural formation dividing the North and South Piha beaches. Lion Rock is the first thing you see as you enter Piha Beach and has not only become an iconic landmark of Piha, but of Auckland's West Coast in general. It was featured on stamps as well as an Auckland phone book.

The north beach is patrolled during summer months by surf lifeguards and even had a TV series over here called Piha Rescue, as it's a dangerous beach to swim at due to the large waves. Swimming on the southern end of the beach is unadvised as there are no surf lifeguards on duty in that area.

I also went to a waterfall at the end of Glen Esk Road, just before Piha called Kitekite falls. It takes about half an hour to get to the falls on foot but it is very worth it. The waterfall has three tiers and offers great photo opportunities from all angles. I didn’t even know it existed until last week. I’ll have to upload some of the photos I took sometime.

Thanks for viewing

Great detail Scott, the people look so tiny compared to the area shown. Aerial views are the best way to show the lay of the land, well captured

Hi Scott,

Lovely view of this beach adorned with those lovely waves. The blue cast fits the image.
Well done. Regards.

Hi Scott,

Impressive panorama of this beach and coastline. Good capture of the waves. PLeased that you had a few people on the beach, they give a good sense of scale. Tfs.

Martyn

hi Scott,
had I not read your notes i would have thought you were hang-gliding or something ! :-)
The view is excellent and you exposed for it and captured it very well indeed.

I like the sense of scale nicely provided by the people on the beach !

Best regards, Daniel

Looks great Scott, (sorry about the pun) one would think you were in a heltcopter.
This is aview of North Piha I haven't seen before, so thank you.
I wasn't there, but our camera club was there Sunday, and the falls were on the agenda.
You didn't spot a crowd wearing C*n*ns and N*k*ns at all?
Pete.

Scott, you have certainly been doing a lot of miles since you joined TL... Nearly every day you are out somewhere else with your camera.

Very impressive scene from this height - no, I have never been up the Lion - and I don't want to...

But you show North Piha from a view not many get to see. How wonderful it looks
TFS
Janice

Hi Scott,

This is a brilliant shot I love the pov and you sometimes have go that extra mile to get a great shot. From the photo you were at quite a height but the scene before you is magic. Well done

Regards
Jon

beautiful seascape with deep colors

Hello Scott
Oh those waves, just great. The people on the baech give us a sense of scale, and the different tones of the sand look good too. You must have a good head for heights!
Regards, Les

Hi Scott, An excellent high POV shows this beautiful NZ beach well. The colour of the sea, the level horizon and clarity even in the distance makes this a very fine posting. TFS. Murray.
