CANNA LILY

I’ve been going through some of my old folders and came across this photo of this Canna Lily. I love these colourful flowers, especially the ones with multi-coloured petals like this one.

I remember taking this photo at the gardens in the Auckland Domain – and looking at the date it was over 2 years ago!!

Canna lilies or Cannas (Canna x generalis) are native to tropical and subtropical areas. Like calla lilies, their rhizomes must be dug up in the fall after frost has blackened the foliage.

Cannas grow 1½ to 5 feet or more, depending on variety. Their large, glossy green leaves are 6 to 12 inches wide.

Their blossoms are clustered at the top of flower spikes which can be up to one foot long. Blossom size varies with the species planted. Cannas grow in red, rose/pink, yellow, red with yellow, and dark red with bronze foliage.

Canna (or Canna lily, although not a true lily) is a genus of approximately twenty species of flowering plants. The closest living relations to cannas are the other plant families of the order Zingiberales that is the gingers, bananas, marantas, heliconias, strelitzias, etc.

Hello, Janice :)

An excellent macro here, splendid vivid colors and eye catching details :)

Wonderful combination of red and yellow... I'm confused, to which of my themes to add it, "Amazing Red" or "Amazing yellow"? Or both?

Regards,
Slavica

Hey Janice!

Wow! Those are some bright petals! Intense color here. You have captured it well. You have some pretty good light and your exposure and focusing are spot on.

A couple suggestions, though. The red border around the image is just too much for my taste. I tend to be quite conservative when it comes to that, though. I also think it would have been great if you could have tucked that curled petal in the bottom right underneath one of the others while you took the shot. My eye keeps wandering there because it's the only thing in the frame not blazing with color.

That said, I think you did a fine job here. Have fun shooting!
