From the same playing-with-a-frame session with Jung Mi. Not sure if this one works ...?

The fabric was an addition to add some colour and variation to an other wise plain white background.

This was my last shoot using the problematic Sigma DG 28-300mm lens. I do not recommend this lens!!

Post processing:

Use polygon selection tool to trace the inside line of the frame. Used magnetic lasso to deselect the finger at its lower left corner.

Duplicated layer, then added layer mask, revealing only the selected area.

Added Lens Blur and Gaussian Blur to background for the blur effect.

Cropped, brightened background. Original uncropped image in WS.

Hi Rew,
A wonderful portrait with fabulous lighting and excellent skin tones.
Lovely composition with the red curtain falling diagonally in a blurred image and goes round the neck of the model in perfect sharpness.
Nice frame for the mosel's beautiful face!
Best regards,

Francis Xavier

v
ps.maybe a bit of space between her right ear and the frame ?

Hi Rew:
You continue to dazzel with fine work and supper PP...super creativity...I mostly do sports photography and commercial so I get to see your work in portraiture:)
Thanks for the notes!
David

Hi Rew,

Another fantastic image from you i must say - this is one great shot in all aspects - really wonderful choise of colors - red white and black, they compliment each other so well !

Amazing POV and creation of center of attention using the wooden frame and in the last but not the least in anyway great sharpness focus and bokeh.

Very well done !

Olá Rew,
First, the BG and out the frame, very good the red is very well. Good idea to apply some blur for contrast.
Second, the accute FP, very sharp emphasizes and gives some profondity to the scene into the scene. I agree with Vlad about a bit of space between the right side and the frame.
Third, Jung Mi is beatiful girl! :o)
Great one, cheers,
Raimundo

beautiful Rew... love your composition... the color combination is terrific! your focus on the face is sharp and I would say a very classy photo... well done friend... TFS

it works - nicely underlines interesting DOF;
cheers - Tom

Hi Rew,

Another nice posting that highlights your creative abilities. I think the concept is great and the red fabric adds nice contrast and a bit of flair. The blurring outside the frame is a nice touch as well. I know that I might get slammed for saying this, but one of the things I think is cute about this shot is that Jung Mi has her eyes slightly cross-eyed as she focuses on whatever she's looking at. This is not a negative aspect, I find it rather down-to-earth. TFS

Best regards,
Werner

Excellent composition, good picture, editing and framing, greetings and hugs

Another Great One!!! Interesting concept and POV!!!
K.

Here , the focus sharpness is great but outside the frame it's so ... strange result.....

I'm not sure if I like this work Rew.

But anyway, I like this creative idea and attitude of the model.
Excellent colors and bg.

Have a great week end

Rew
also beautiful thought and composition, very good result and output1
TFS thanks for sharing
Nasos

Great composition, pp editing and framing is nice.

Cris

the pose is great, i like the angle and composition, but the out of focus frame in her hands don't work well
i wish there was a bigger ring focus
of course, it's just a matter of tastes
cheers

Love the comp POV and bright red.
This great shot is let down by the DOF
IMO it would be better if the whole pic was in focus
TFS

Hi Rew,
I especially like the picture in picture option. The red scarf is almost led to the human eye in the frame of her face. Nice work. TFS
Regards Sandor

Hello Rew,
nice use of light, dof and white, red and black colors.
nice portrait.

yopie

Hi Rew.

I am surprised that you are having issues with the lens as the result proved otherwise. I like the selective focusing in this shot and the red goes pretty well with Asian Chinese skin tone. Well framed with the frame and thanks for sharing.
Best regards,
Jusni

The whole setup and arrangement of this picture could be from Huf,I love it Rew!

Hi Rew,
For some reason I have the impression the shallow DOF (hands and frame out of focus) makes my eye desperate looking for a starting point of this image. Personally I would have chosen for a higher f-stop and a deeper DOF having everything in focus. The idea is great though and the pose of Jung Mi is excellent (and I do remember the red cloth :-)
Hans

Hi Rew, nice that you found an opportunity to use your red fabric again!
I really like this ... great sharpness on Jung Mi's face.
Creative idea .. very well executed IMHO!
Great job mate.

Hi Rew,I like your PP work with this image I guess only the subject inside the frame is meant to be the main focus, all exterior items are secondary & not required to be of importance, so that viewer's focus, is on your lovely model,& that works for me.She really pops out on my screen.
TFS

Hello Rew,
The concept is terrific , that's one under your belt, this is really excellent , the set-up is well done : the white BG is well chosen to bring out every single element that stands in front of it , your model's skin and hair, her black dress and the red scarf all contrast very well against it ,compositionally speaking it's first class , nevertheless what i am not too sure about and i think Timtim is right about this ,is the focus , what is or what could be in focus ,for ex, her dress at the bottom should be in focus , yet the whole picture would have more impact if all was neat and sharp , i believe it commands focus from front to back , just my opinion mate, thank you for sharing your PP notes , have a nice week ,
Carol

Hi Rew, She has an unusual attractiveness about her, not traditional, but with your creative pose, whe frame and the long red sash it jusps out from the screen. The pure white around the back works well. You are a portrait photographer with a very wide skillset. TFS. Murray.
PS Tks for comment on rose, you are right, i need to learn more manual settings rather than just leaving it set to P.

Hi Rew,
I'll be honest. I have a hard time giving cititque to this genre of photos for several reasons. The first is that I do not have any experience in it and thus don't understand the technical part of it. And second, I hate photographing people and therefore have less interest in looking at it. But, I do admire those that love this genre and have such great understanding of the technique and more important have such well developed creativity in creating yet another eyecatching composition.

I really like the idea of using a frame to frame the model in your frame. It certainly draws the eye to her eyes. The use of the added blur helps the idea even more. The lighting, to me, looks perfect especially the catchlight in her eyes are nice.

Maybe by the end of next week I know more about this genre since I have to model for a product shoot at the company I work at.

TFS,
Niek

Hii, nice shot.

Hi Rew
great composition
good idea
beautiful model
everything is beautiful in this picture
bravo

Hi Rew...interesting and artistic shot....well done.

Roger

Hmmm, Rew, I've mixed feelings about this photo.

The main reason is that I have difficulties to sense what you wanted to convey with it (the first criterium I always check when viewing a photo, before looking at the more technical aspects). Could it be this picture was mainly (only?) meant to be an experiment?

As to the PP-work, kudos for having achieved it (I woudn't!), but whereas I don't notice any technical flaw, I've some questions as to some choices you made.

To be more precise: rationally, I can understand why you only left the inside of the frame pin-sharp, but visually, it does not really work in my opinion. There is too much blur compared with the total surface of your image. If your background had been more discreet, this probably wouldn't have bothered me. Now, however, our attention is not only drawn by what we sharply see inside the frame, but also by the red cloth that, though blurred, tries to keep our eyes away from Jung Mi's face by imposing us its vivid red colour.

To put it briefly: impressive and technically flawless PP work, but the result looks somehow confusing to me...

Of course, I invite you to (dis)agree! ;o)

TFS & kind regards,
Erik

having read most comments, i can clearly see what people are applauding and criticizing.

fully sharp? or the way it is presented? the answer to that is simply personal taste. and strangely enough, part of me like the version you've presented and part of me would like to see an absolutely sharp-across-the-frame shot.

i must say that the addition of the fabric to the plain background really does work here. it lends the photo a great deal of balance and divides the frame nicely for the viewer's eyes to feast upon :)

have a good day :)

muhammad muhsin

Hi, Rew.
Good idea: blurring and color create a nice visual sequence of layers. The red is the right choice.
Best regards
Renzo

Hi Rew,

I like very much your compo, and her pose works well, what it doesnt work for me is the depth of field, which I would have liked more "thick": the frame and the hands of her are important elements of the whole compo and in that way the eye are searching for them without find it (the hand especially is almost melted with the arm).

M

Hi Rew,
Can you do this without PP work as well?

Jung Mi is always a pretty model under your camera.
She has the typical oriental style lady of Asian.
You have made her vivid in your picture.
I appreciate your focusing which is accurate.
Red and White background creat a wonderful contrast.
TFS.

Hi Rew

Missed this one. I would have asked the model to move the frame slightly to the left (her right) so that there is white space all around her, & the red line of the scarf disappears into the top right corner of the picture frame. I don't mean to be unkind, but in this shot, she appears slightly cross eyed? Apart from that, a perfect shot. Tfs!

Hi Rew.

I like this shot very much. The composition is great and the color of the fabric add much punch to it. IMHO, may be frame could have been set a little more to the left in order to allow the white background to completely surround Jung Mi's head. The effect of the PP is very nice too.

Regards
Pascal-Eric

Here comes the "RED" :)
See how the Red had pushed the photo :)

I like the concept of giving blur to out of the frame region.
May be if u've used wider aperture to get the real lens blur, it might have not kept the inn-frame area as sharper as it is now but it would have given a very nice lens blur :)

Cheers
JZM

hi rew! nice pp work! the blurred effect on the frame is awesome. nice colors too. red cloth in a white background. nice sharpness of the girl inside the frame. very unique! TFS!
