[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
On a winter Sunday afternoon Johannes agreed to pose for an hour in an outdoor/natural light shoot.

We went to Purewa Cemetery, where I've done previous shoots, including a series with Bianca last year.

I wanted to recreate some of the successes of that earlier shoot - but instead, I learned that the Sigma 28-300 lens I was doggedly trying to master was, in fact, rubbish.

Almost all of the shots I took of Johannes using the Sigma lens were unusable - whereas, a year ago, using the Canon 70-300mm kit lens, almost every shot was sharp.

So, the Sigma is now sitting back in its box while I decide what to do with it.

This shot was taken with the 50mm Canon prime. Converted from RAW, resized and sharpened.

Hi Rew...the light and details are perfect..the pose doesn't work well for me...I have trouble getting too close with the 50mm lens because of the perspective...I don't mind the 50 if I can stand back a little. In this shot her head and face seem too prominent to me which is exaggerated by the short depth of field....

Roger

Hi Rew,

I doubt that I'll ever have the handle on portrait photography that you do (and therefore cannot critique it adequately), but I think this is another good one. Lighting is perfect and although the pose may not suit everyone's tastes, I think it adds to the melancholy look on Johannes' face. Prime lenses are probably the way to go with portraits and I'm surprised that you were happy with the 70 - 300 mm lens. I've been happy with mine so far, but then, again, I don't do portraits.

Best regards,
Werner

Hi Rew,

I don't have a freakin' clue what I'm talking about, but I know I like the portrait. I like the camera position. Is the 50mm what you usually use as a portrait lens?

Dennis

Hello Rew, I'd mostly agree with what Roger already mentioned, reflection/light on her eyes are just beautiful, although I don't have much experience in this kind of photo shoot, this is what I think..
cheers

hello Rew...
its been a long time...:)How are u my friend..

about this picture..i do not have much comment and critics to give..I guess its quite simple this time...but i really like it..Nice angle and DOF...and surely sharp focus on her face too..Great job my friend..

Regards,
CM

Very nice natural portrait of this lovely model. The sharp details of her eyes are captured nicely and the use of a shallow Dof has created an interesting shot. I like the composition with the high angle shot adding some extra aura around her and she seems completely at ease with you behind the camera. Well done!

cheers,

Dilshan

Hi Rew, Very good supersharp portrait with good colours and the eyes are well seen, it is an ideal close-up. You know your lenses for sure. The shallow DOF has been very effective here. TFS. Murray.

PS When suitable check the Canon 70-200mm it is supposedly made for portraits according to the 50D booklet i was given a week ago.

Hi Rew,
What i like from this photo are the skin tone with the cyan shirt and the sharpness on her eyes.
Nice high angle shot.

Excellent picture, good shot, a natural sitting, congratulations, hugs

Beautiful! This reminds me of FILM! Love the downward shot, glance over the shoulder! Nice DOF on this, it makes the shot for me, pulls the focus to the girl!

good call on the 50mm lens.

my general advice regarding portraits like this one would be to stick to the 50mm lens. it is lightweight, has good focusing and very good optics :) not to mention, a bokeh to die for.

as for the sigma, i think it was a mistake on your part to get that lens in the first place.

sigma makes EXCELLENT lenses, but the ones such as the 28-300 don't represent sigma well.

my recommendation would be to get a sigma 24-70 2.8 lens for your canon, its not to heavy, not too costly and does very well.

to get the MOST out of my portraits, i would only reach out and grab an 85mm 1.8 lens or a 135mm f/2 lens for telephoto portraits.

this is a well shot photo. i only wish the girl was smiling.

Nice eye contact
Different position top down
As usual very good

Salam Rew

Nice point of view with great focus and details
Although the BG is not perfect here but I always like outdoor portraits, well done

Best wishes, Alireza

Hi Rew: Beautiful eyes looking at the optics. Interesting pov in fine shallow focus. Regards. Jusni

Hi Rew, I like the angle from which this picture is taken. I like the sharpness of it too. Your 50,1.8 is really good. I love this lens too. But your picture is extraordinarily sharp. I love it. Well done. Sothy

Hi Rew,
Very sharp portrait. Very good position for model. very nice color of cloth (i like cyan color).
