This is a bull thistle plant that I spotted in a paddock last week. It may look nice, but it is considered to be an obnoxious weed and spreads like wildfire. It’s branches and leaves are covered with spikes, which can be painful if you come in contact with them.

The sun was directly behind me when I took this, so I used my 18-55mm lens and switched to manual focus to really single out the head of the plant from the background.

It was quite windy on the hill I was standing on, so it took a bit of patience for the wind to die down enough. There has been very little editing done - The focus you see is completely natural due to the shallow depth of field. All I had to do was resize it to 800-pixels and give it a quick sharpen.

Bull thistle plants have a two-year life cycle, flowering and setting seed in the second year. They prefer sunny, open areas and can tolerate a wide range of conditions, from moist to dry soils, and are typically found in disturbed areas such as roadsides, trails, logged areas, vacant land, pastures and cultivated land.

with all its demerits its perhaps the best picture of the day.By demerits I mean of flower or this weed. You have so well captured and presented that I feel like to touch it.thanks God its behind the safety of your lenses.Very sharp and clear.balanced and perfect in all aspects.tfs

Hello Scott,

Great close-up of this thistle.
Sharp (in all departments) and detailing the beautiful flowerhead, perfectly.
The colours are accurate and the narrow dof has produced an excellent 3D quality to the shot.
My only grumble, sad to have found one, is that the flower is facing out of the shot rather than into it.
Otherwise A*

Have a good day,
Bev :-)

Hi Scott,

Lovely capture of the tender and soft flower with great colors! The POV and DOF are very well maintained and the sharpness is just crisp. The green blurred BG gives great contrast to this bright purple colored flower.

Very well done!

best regards,
Paras

Hi, Scott -
Very sharp details of the beautiful (but dangerous) thistle with bright, vibrant color. The 18-55mm really did a nice job with this macro. The strong sunlight is well-managed and background is smoothly blurred. Very nice image.

Bom dia Scott
Great sharpness ( perfect to me) and very beautiful composition.
Impressive shot.
My regards
Teresat

Hi Scott,

Nicely composed. The thistle is right in a thirds sweet spot, with exceptional sharpness and shallow DOF. Kudos for creating a top notch composition without any PP work. TFS

Best regards,
Werner

Nice shot Scott! Love the DOF in this! We have a thing called "Bull Nettle" and it's a long reed with thorns with hooks on them. You land in Bull Nettle and you might as well forget it...it's OVER. HAHA! I love the contrast of the bright flower against the darker BG!
B-)

Hi Scott

Impeccable use of a shallow dof, with good sharpness on the purple thistle flower, (no pun intended) & excellent lighting contrasts & framing. Tfs!

hi dear Scott...
What beautiful color and light
great details
and sharing a good shot
greetings

Fantastic close-up of this thistle mate. I'm pretty sure we have this variety of thistle here too ... deadly prickles!
Great composition here .. I really like how you've placed the thistle nicely off-center, and the blurred, upopened bud fills the negative space. Great eye Scottie.
Have a good day.
Trudy

Hello Scott,
Purples are shown best against a darker b/g, and you did quite well in rendering an optimum exposure. The thistle's head is sharp and will probably look better if a bee or a butterfly were atop. Well done...
Danilo

Hello Scott, spectacular quality!!
Good tight focus on the head of the thistle.
The light was perfect.
Tfs, regards Jean.

Hi Scott
good capture of thistle, old and young flowers.
good light and nice natural colors.
well composed and presented.
greetings
tsilla

Steady on mate - that obnoxious weed is our Scottish national emblem :)
(Apparently the Vikings were attacking some Scots during the night and they stood on the thistles and their cries woke the sleeping Scots)
A nice close-up of this wonderful plant and good use of the shallow DoF
cheers
Jack

Looks a little like the scottish thistle but I am intrigued by the white tips on the stems Excellent sharpness and lovely colour TFS
warm regards

hi Scott,
a beautiful macro shot of splendid thistle flower,
its thorny shape and delicate gradation of violet colors are nicely captured,
and its sharp figure is well contrasted right blurred another bud, this space feeling is cheerful for my sensation.
thank you for your excellent shot,
Akihisa

Hi Scott

After beautiful landscpae series, this macro is a different work of you
Nice contrast, well focused with good BG
Personally I do like if the pink flower locate in the right side

TFS. Alireza

I loved watching my horse delecately extract the nut out of these flowers. He thought it a delicacy.

Really nice capture, lovely colour and DOF.

Hello Scott,
Breathtaking game of light with shadow...
Skilfully positioned flowers and good DOF

Hi Scott, Good close up with remarkable and attractive purple colour dominating. You obtained excellet DOF effect with this lens. If i remember rightly we called these Scotch thistles, but if that ID is anything like my guess at bird species, likely i am wrong! Either way, i like the effect of sharp points and brilliant purple. TFS. Murray.

Hi Scott,

Very nice macro.
Beautifull colours, sharp, POV and nice tones.

Greetings and TFS,
Constantinos
