East Cape Coastline

This is another photo taken from on coach trip around the East Cape of the North Island of New Zealand. The first couple of days were wet and windy, as you can see here. but within 24 hours I am happy to say that the weather had changed and we had hot sunny days from then on.

Yes, the bus was moving when I took this photo!

We took State Highway 35 round the coast from Opotiki to Gisborne. 30 years ago when we last came this way, this road was one of the lesser roads of New Zealand - it had the reputation of being a dusty nightmare – and it was! This is now no longer true as it is now fully sealed making it a comfortable 100km per hour road now part of the Pacific Highway. Although there are stretches of road with no amenities, petrol, limited accommodation and some meals are obtainable at regular intervals.

Road warnings of wandering stock are to be believed. There are no fences, and the best animal food is often found right next to the road, so it often felt like we were driving through the middle of herds of cows, sheep, or pigs.

The average family unit in this area seems to include horses and a few other livestock. Travel on horseback also seems to be the norm rather than the exception in this area. Settlements now consisted almost entirely of marae – the Maori meetinghouse.

Perfect, so natural and so strange, looking a bit dangerous and dark but still so beautiful. Very nice image.

Olga

Wonderful threatening sky Janice! I can almost hear the roar of the waves...
Absolute beautiful view and very well taken from that moving bus!

Cheers,
Anneke

My goodness Janice MF, that is quite the opposite indeed. But then we live on opposite sides of the world and the seasons are also opposite.
Amazing that you managed to take this from a moving bus!

I remember doing this road the other way round in 1969 while on a short holiday when the eldest were small.By the time we got back to Whakatane and Dads place my hair was standing straight out from my head with the dust. We all got a laugh out of that but before we returned to Kumeu we did one more idiotic trip. A 1958 Humber 80, two kids 3 & 1 1/2 and we went round the loop through the Urewera NP and out to the coast and back to Whakatane, not bad for a one day trip. By then I was ready to say if we ever went on a dirt road again I would say rude words but somehow as we were enjoying a 4day break from dairy cows that didnt make much sense.
Was the first time I ever had the fun of actually hosing out the inside of the family car. Funny how the East coast looks so similar the full length of the country, TFS and sorry for waffling on

What a grim image, Janice. But then again, you're heading for winter whereas over here weather is getting better and better ;o)).
Nice compo, the cloud blends in perfectly with the hill.

Well done from a moving bus Janice. Very dark and moody. TFS. Pat.

Hi Janice. Very similar looking to the weather here on Wednesday morning during which the severe thunderstorm dropped all of 1.2mm of rain on the city. Excellent colours and the detail of the waves terrific considering you were moving. TFS,
David

Hi Janice,

A great moody photo! That sky really looks dramtic!
I like how you managed to capture that wave crashing (in the middle of the photo)

Well seen & composed

Hi Janice,
WOW- rough seas. I am amazed at your quality from a moving bus. Excellent colors and tones in this. Really a moody photo. Well done and TFS Julie

Hi Janice,
Looks wet and wild alright, more like a winters capture rather than late summer. You got the exposure spot on for this one.
We really enjoyed the day with you, Dawn and Pam.
Kind regards,
Peter.

Janice,
Great storm clouds in the background with the crashing waves in the foregound. Good composition. Well captured on the bus. :)
