This place amazes me all the time.

KUIRAU PARK, ROTORUA

Walking tracks lead to numerous areas of vigorous geothermal activity. Provided you stay on the cool side of the safety fences, visitors are generally quite safe. New eruptions do occur from time to time, so it pays to err on the side of caution. In 2001 mud and rocks the size of footballs were suddenly hurled 10 metres into the air as a new steam vent spontaneously announced its arrival. Two years later, similar eruptions provided a real bonus for delighted visitors.

In early Maori times this small lake in the park was much cooler and was known as Taokahu. Legend tells us that a beautiful young woman named Kuiarau was bathing in the waters when a taniwha (legendary creature) dragged her to his lair below the lake. The gods above were angered and made the lake boil so the Taniwha would be destroyed forever. From that time on, the bubbling lake and the steaming land around it have been known by the name of the lost woman, although the spelling has changed a little.

I love the Maori legends!

Thanks for looking and have a nice weekend.

Hi LuDivine,
New Zealand sure looks like a magical place, one I am yet to visit! I always find something mystical about fog, mist or steam. Your picture here looks amazing in the full sunlight. It is very well composed, using the steam as background to the trees. Perfect clarity also and a very interesting note! Well done.

Hello LuDivine,
Wow, amazing indeed! Excelent legend, great composition and colors.
Thanks,
Mihaela

Beautiful and strange image, a very nice job. The colors are beautiful and the atmosphere is very absobing. I love this mysterious mist.
Great.

Hi LuDivine
great capture of the steam along with the dead trees.
the colour of the sky is wonderful. too colourful may be to convey the end of the world. :)
I'll try to make a workshop in which I will try to suit the shot to the mood of the end of the world. hope yo don't mind.

Nice, atmospheric - probably vapourous - shot.
A little bit of steam goes a long way!

Great shot - it almost looks like a bush fire.

Hi LuDivine,

I'm not quite sure if the opening of a new steam vent is something I would like to witness - seems a bit dangerous when I read your note.
The smell probably also is not very nice - so all in all I'm glad you did the reporting here - this really is a wonderful capture of this strange and impressive landscape.

Hi LuDivine,
yes, this looks an amazing place. I love visiting Rotorua and seeing what new and dangerous airvents have opened up since I was last there!!
Well captured showing those burnt manuka trees. The blue sky gives a good look to the whole image too.
Janice

Salut LuDivine,

An intriguing perspective is beautifully drawn in this frame. Beautifully chosen location, timing and view point. Atmosphere is fabullous and an innovative title is adding more charm of vision. Well done.

Thanks for sharing this image.

Hello LuDivine! Fantastic landscape. Mysterious fog. Beautiful light and colors. Good POV and capture. Well done!

La partie en bas de la photo me fait penser à l'Enfer tel que Dante l'avait songé... la partie en haut au bleu du paradis.
Vraiment éfficace le contrast des couleurs.
Bravo et merci d'avoir partagé!
Ciao, Antonella

Hi LuDivine,
I like the contrast of the black trees with deep blue colours of the sky. If it hadn't been Rotorua, you would assume it was the aftermath of a fire
well done
Jack

Bonjour ludivine

excellent photo, ce paysage apocalyptique est impressionant. j'aime beaucoup

G'Day,
Stunning image. The sky is so wonderfully blue. The mist creates a feeling of gloom a bit, and of course the bleak foreground just says it's all over.
The again some might say NZ is the start of the world and everyone just follows ;-)
