Boiling Mud Pool in Action at Kuirau Park, Rotorua

Rotorua is famous for its geysers and its hot and muddy pools.

There's an amazing selection in the Rotorua mud pools, depending on how liquid the mud is.

They are always changing, and new features appearing, and old shapes going away.

You could spend hours just photographing the same areas over and over, and see new things each time.

There are three very simple steps to taking photos of mud pool bubbles right at the moment they burst.

First:

1 Choose the bubbling mud pool you want to photograph and get your camera ready to photograph it...

Then:
2 When you think a bubble is about to burst, press the shutter release...

And finally:
3 Repeat steps two and three 30 or 40 times!

This is a coloured photo - this is the actual colour of the mud here.

My first reaction was - WOW! That would be SO much fun!

I like the bubble that just burst next to the one that looks like a mushroom. That is the last image in my head before I go to bed...

Cool.

Always reminds me of porridge on the boil but the smell is quite different. The central bubble about to burst looks like a big mushroom. This is one of those situations where extreme patience and shooting in continuous mode helps. Really clear and sharp. Thanks

EWWWW!!! and oh so totally cool all at once! Love your note and thinking the mud is kinda like snowflakes no two bursts are alike!! This must have been so much fun to photograph! TFS

Hi Janice,
You won't believe this but I was in Rotorua on Thursday and I took a photo of the exact same mud-pool and followed the exact same steps as you did, ha ha. Took ages to get a good shot. You caught this one well, nicely composed too :).

TFS,
Scott.

Hello Janice,

I'm glad you included notes; I had just assumed that this was b&w!
Superb details ... I will now know how to capture them, should I ever get to N.Z.
This would make a wonderful terrain for some space film!

Have a great w/e,
Bev :-)

Hi Janice,
A good capture of this bulbling mud pool. Have to laugh about your explanation ofg how to capture bubling mud. I took about 250 opictures of these mud pools and about 3 were reasonable enough to show :-) So you managed this very well. Perfect sharp and the perfect contrast!

Hi Janice

None of my shots of the Rotorua mudpools turned out well so thanks for sharing. A good decisive moment on this volcanic marvel. Well done!

Do you get in the mud baths and soak head to toe, to make your skin beautiful? I think I would like a photo of that! LOL! Without pink nightie! HAHA! Good shot Janice, very interesting! Good notes!

Hi Janice
This is very interesting boiling mud pool photo, certainly a different and interesting image. Without the description it would be difficult to work out or even imagine what the pool is about. Good notes also.
Best regards
Balwant

I'm surprised this is color. Superb detail! Very impressive! TFS

Hi Janice,

Great capture, I like the action here and the thick consistency!! Minimalistic colours that work great in this photo.

My compliments

Regards
Karen

hahahhahahaha... great note Janice, especially step 3! ... ah, but it's so much fun watching the plopping mud (despite the smell)... and you might as well get your moneys worth!
I'll have to visit Rotorua when back in NZ in August... mud pools are my favourite!!

Awesome capture of the mud bubbles bursting. I also love the POV, with the less gassy mud boiling away in the top left corner...

mmmm... I've just been struck how the mud pools are sort of similar to melted chocolate, with the cooled 'chocolate' hardening to the edges of the pool (ok, yes, I'm craving a bit of chocolate at the moment!)

Thanks again
C
