This is another one of the many roses that I saw at the public gardens at Rotorua a few weeks ago. Unfortunately they didn't have the name of the rose under it. But I thought it was a very pretty apricot colour.

History of the Rose

The first fossil records of the rose date back 35 million years. In 3000 B.C., in what is now Iraq, the Sumerians created he first written record of the rose. Sappho, in her 600 B.C. "Ode to the Rose," referred to this beauty as the queen of flowers, a reference still popular today.

In the 16th century, colonists brought the rose to North America, making it the longest cultivated European plant in this country.

In 1798, Empress Josephine acquired her palace at Malmaison and created the most remarkable rose garden ever planted. It included every variety known at the time (about 250).

"Modern" rose hybrids date back to 1867, and by 1920 hybrid teas dominated the market. They remain the most popular rose variety today. All-America Rose Selections formed in 1938 to test new rose varieties to determine which, if any, could be recommended to the public. One of the most popular roses of all time, Peace, was smuggled to the United States from occupied France in 1945.

What a beauty Janice! Wonderful time of the day to be shooting flower shots, the light seems to be very soft. Perfect focus and composition too. Is this from the rose garden next to the Rotorua Museum at all? Well seen.

As they say, Janice, a rose by any other name ... !
A lovely and a very different view of a rose.
I like how it is standing proud from the other roses, yet they still have a role in the context and composition.
This is a good focus, I'm glad you weren't tempted to oversharpen it.

Have a good day,
Bev :-)

Hi Janice,

Nice shot of this beautiful rose. I like the soft tones against the dark green b/g. Indeed it stands with pride from the others.

My compliments

Karen

Janice,

Stunning! Absolutely Stunning! Gorgeous rose! I can almost smell the sweet scent. I think this was the kind my mom had along a fence when I was a child. I like how you have captured the light from behind. Also, I like the low angle at which you shot the photo. Were you squatting on the ground? :)

Hi Janice,
You rendered so nicely the softness and elegance of this rose!
Excellent low POV and DOF making a dark and lightly blurred BG.
I envy your skills! Bravo! Annie
