Hi Rew - I'm really not too sure what to say about this, so forgive me if I ramble a bit!

Technically good, like all your shots. The horizon is level :-) many seascapes here can't manage that! The breaking waves across the bottom add depth and interest....and the rainbow effect is well captured. So far, all good.

But...it doesn't grab me...there's now 'wow' factor, I guess. I think the image is good, but it needs something else - maybe a boat or a person in the scene. Yes, i know it's not your fault they weren't there :-) Maybe there's just too much blue sea...perhaps if you'd got down to the waters edge and knelt down. I think that's maybe my main issue - too much dark blue sea with nothing to break it up..? Apologies for the "1 point" but hopefully that reflects that I think this is "good" but not "excellent"...sorry!

I do like your seascape...but I also agree with Richard. So I have done a quick workshop, I think it gives your image a bit more Wow. I hope you like it.

Hmmm .... not your style Rew, did you miss your mood that day ? The photo quality itself is good but not good enough to attract my attention. The sea looks very empty as supposed not to in a seascape like this. At least there is one boat or object where we can compose the space in between. The rainbow is there but not strong enough to build a character. That's my honest opinion, regards, ari

I am also not attracted by this seascape but the rainbow and the breaking wave made me take a closer look. ;-)...??...!! ò //.. sorry - its early in the morning here and last night was though.
Well in my eyes the middle part with the flat and poor contrast water is too dominating and destroys the performance of this compo. Your low POV and the lack of zoom did not allow to do any better than what we see and therefore it is just fine. I will post a similar view from the SP that was taken more than a decade ago. Seems to be the same kind of short fat rainbow but the clouds came out stronger.
I always try to take rainbows with 2 steps underexposure and a polarize filter which usually helps to support the main thing: the colours of the rainbow. Have a great sunday. Thomas

Hi Rew,
I guess the others have pretty much said it all ... technically,the shot is good but the expanse of flat ocean between the features of interest does detract from the character.
The DOF is quite remarkable in that you have got both the foreground waves and the clouds in focus,but I think I might have just zoomed in on the rainbow with a few of the more interesting clouds on either side.
Either that or got down close to the water to get a lower POV and bring the waves and horizon closer together.
Good experiment though,and I'm sure you've learnt a bit from it.

Not too bad my friend. The rainbow gives it a lift - but it needs someting else in it - like a dog or man walking on the beach. Even a seagull. Or one of your models laying on the sand - well, stones, seeing its Napier!!
But I like seeing a change of style from you - we need to break out and try new things. So bravo!

Yep, there is something missing - but since you have a lot in your portfolio I went for a little search and made you a WS with explanation - Rew, hope I'm not upsetting you, if so just write me an angry letter - but I do hope that the WS is making up for it.

hmm theres a handbook on that lying around Rew.=)
it kinda look empty but hey theres the rainbow and its a decisive moment i assume. so no need to wait for another subject to populate the scene.
ah darn it, people always look for the "ohhh" and "aahhh" well you couldnt have that all the time but if you look closely there is always ohh and ahh hidden in every photo. just snap whatever you may come along.
when you see something like this you cant fumble around for the "manual-for-sea-with great-rainbow-but-no-people-or-dog-handbook."

Hi Mate,

All had been said. Metering, clarity and color of the image is unquestionable. But I notice the color of the sand, is it really black in that beach?

I've seen several image taken from the beach, they normally include at lease 20%+ of the sand as part of their composition. Maybe your too close to the beach and focus on capturing the rainbow that is why you crop too much the sand part. Its just my observation

Hi Rew. Great colours and nice light and mist captured in the BG -- and of course the rainbow too. I bet if you would have got on your knees and played a bit with the rule of thirds that this would be an even stronger photo. Cheers. Karin. no points left tonight.
