Lake Waikaremoana

In the remote ranges of Te Urewera National Park is Lake Waikaremoana - a place of clear water, isolated rocky beaches and untouched forest.

My husband and I stopped here overnight on our holiday this week. Lake Waikaremoana - sea of rippling waters lies between ranges in the southeast of the park, about 160 kilometres southeast of Rotorua. But was that road rough - the last 80 kilometres or so are on a winding unsealed road. It certainly took a long time to travel on the road.

We went out on a boat around the lake and the sun was setting as we were returning back to our cabin.

There are two versions of how the lake was formed:

The Maori Version:

Maori legends tell that the lake was formed when a father drowned his disobedient daughter, turning her spirit into a taniwha (magical water monster), which frantically pushed this way and that, trying to reach the sea before the sunlight turned her to stone. It is said that her restless, unhappy spirit keeps the waters stirred and rippling even on calm days.

The Pakeha(*) Version:
The lake itself (elevation 582 metres) was created around 2,000 years ago when an earthquake triggered a massive landslide that blocked a river, so the lake is formed of drowned river valleys, which contribute to its interesting shape. In 1946 a government hydro-electrical project lowered the lake level by 5 metres and it now covers about 54 square kilometres within the 2,120 square kilometres of Te Urewera National Park.

What one do you believe?

(*)Pakeha? That means White Man

An inspiration as usual Janice. This capture is awesome the colours are amazing and the wave trail left by the boat adds drama to the foreground.

Fanstastic view, Janice.
Thats what I called 'Holiday'.
Is this taken from your own boat ? Now I know where Cameron is geeting it from. lol
Cheers, jan

Hi Janice,
I love the look of the sky in this image. The lighting is superb and so is the quality of this photo. I can only imagine how hard it was to keep the camera still. I like the Maori version of the way the lake was formed more than the white persons.
Cheers,
Debbie

Hi Janice,
Great view and exciting too. The trail of the boats gives this peaceful panorama a bit action! The clouds are stunning with the perfect light. Excellent posting my dear Janice!

Best wishes.

Stunning atmosphere that fits the Maori story very well. The Pakeha one is too clinical and boring.

Yummie... this is one of those rare occasions on TL where the thumbnail screams "OPEN ME!" and I'm very glad that I did just that ;o). A beauty, Janice. Terrific sky with magnificent colours and the compo is just sublime... I love that wide aspect, the hills make very nice silhouettes and provide sort of a natural frame for the sky...

Hi Janice,

Beautiful view, nice ride on the boat, what, no lines? I fish when on a boat. ;)

Hi Janice, one word, priceless! Great shot for sure. I love the mood here, the clarity and the 'path' in the water taking our eyes back. TFS.

Excellent Janice. A clear and crisp shot considering the motion of the boat. Well composed and lovely colour and detail. TFS,

Janice,
If I look up the term photographic texture in the dictionary, THIS photo would have to be next to it. Unbelievable. This image has it all....great "use of light", perfect dark/shadow tones, awesome composition and the mountains are spectacular. I don't know if you could expect much more than this when you tripped your shutter, except maybe a casino slot machine with three "Jackpots" in the preview screen. GREAT work!
