Tuai Church

I came across this small church in Tuai, a small settlement tucked in bush on the edge of the Urewera National Park.

At first I thought it was unused, as there was a lot of graffiti on the building and some of the windows were broken too.

But imagine my surprise and happiness when I saw these windows at the side of the church.

The Cross and the Easter Lilies showed me that yes, there is still life left in the church, and that the Christian congregation have placed these pretty Easter lilies (known as Christmas Lilies in England) on to the altar with their love at this very special time of the year – Easter. Throughout the world we celebrate the resurrection of our Saviour God.

The township of Tuai was built to support hydro power development in the region in 1929, the settlement now boasts a young (32% are under 15 years of age) and largely Maori (72% claim Maori descent) population of 270. This population, many of whom work in the Conservation Estate, supports rugby, league and golf teams, a shop and club, community hall, fire station, church, two marae and two schools.

Tuai school is set right in the heart of the settlement, in the midst of the dams, settlement ponds, slipways, and the Lake Waiwhakamarino that together make up the hydro power complex.

This is a beautiful composition. Geometry is showcased in this picture.

I love how those object are silhouetted by the stained window glass.

Lovely windows. I like the way the flowers and cross "looks" through the windows. Good image for this special time.

Small churches - always so much nicer then modern big cathedrals.
The stonework - the cross - the flowers - the roof - the symetrie - very good.
I hope you had as good a time at the Easter Holidays as we all did over here at the other side of the world.

Sorry I missed this shot at its posting . . . an inspirational visual and written message, and all the better that your flowers made it into the shot as well. Easter lillies given to me this year have now dropped their blooms, but we will plant them and look for them next year.
