~ Beach Banquet ~

I visited the Manawatu Estuary this afternoon and enjoyed a walk along the beach. IT was very windy as the estuary is flat and exposed. There was plenty of driftwood lying around, washed up and dumped by rough seas, high tides, strong river currents, and strong winds. They gave the landscape added interest and rugged appeal.

During my walk I saw these gulls in the middle distance from my POV swooping down on something of interest on the beach which I assumed to be fish. They seemed to be swooping down in turn, like a squadron, and I managed to capture this moment in this photo. TFV.

Some info on the Manawatu estuary…

The Manawatu river is one of the largest North Island rivers, its estuary channels its contents into the Tasman Sea on the west coast of New Zealand North Island. The estuary is a beautiful location and is world renowned as a significant conservation area for sea birds.

Up to 93 bird species have been spotted and identified at or in the vicinity of this large estuary, 13 of which are permanently present. Examples of birds seen there at various times include:

Lesser Knot
South Island Pied Oyster Catcher,
Mallard
Royal Spoonbill
Banded Dotterel
Grey Teal
New Zealand Shoveller
Pied Stilt
Wrybills
Bar-Tailed Godwit.

The Bar-Tailed Godwit is particularly important to ornithologists as they are known to seasonally migrate non-stop to a few locations in New Zealand all the way from Siberia. An immense journey!

Hi Martyn,
A quite special view, excellent low POV which creates an interesting vies. The sky is a bit dull though. Anywya a fine posting.

Martyn,
This shot is enhanced by the absence of many colors. Almost color minimalist! Good presentation too,
Cheers,
Wellington
