[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Kapiti Island, from where I took this photo, lies 5km off the Kapiti coast of the New Zealand North Island and has an area of approximately 2000 hectares. The island measures 10km in length and 2kn at its widest. The highest point is 520m above sea level.

It is home to an internationally famed nature reserve protecting some the world's rarest and most endangered birds. The island is one of New Zealand's most valuable nature reserves.

Many parts of the island are covered in scrub which is dominated by native plants which are gradually regenerating after devastating clearance fires of the 1800s and earlier.

The bird life is abundant and includes Kaka, Kakariki, Robin, Saddleback, Stitchbird, Weka, Kereru, Bellbirds and the very rare Takahe. Many of these birds species are rare and endangered. Kiwi inhabit Kapiti Island and as they are nocturnal birds are not to be seen during the day.

Along the shoreline various shag and gull species, white-fronted terns, variable oystercatchers and reef herons may be seen. There is a lagoon at the northern end of the island where scaup, grey teal, and black swans are often seen. Royal spoonbills and brown teal are frequently seen here.

The channel between the island and the mainland is designated a marine reserve. Whales are sometimes seen in this channel.

Kapiti island is well worth a visit though advance booking is essential as only 50 people per day may visit and a Department of Conservation visiting permit is a pre-requisite. TFR. :-)

Now I like the restricted visits per day bit Martyn, good idea. Is the horizon tilted here or did you look across at an angle? Lovely colours and excellent foreground detail with that rocky beach. TFS,
David
