~ Springtime Splendour ~

This flower belongs to an enormous Magnolia tree situated within the Cross Hills Garden, Kimbolton. Many varieties are grown there ranging from small shrub-size plants to trees in excess of 12 metres height.

The ornamental flower chalices are spectacular, ranging in shades from purple, claret, mouve, pink, and white.

The Magnolia is a large genus of about 210 flowering plant species in the subclass Magnolioideae of the family Magnoliaceae. Magnolia is an ancient genus. Having evolved before bees appeared, the flowers developed to encourage pollination by beetles. As a result, the carpels of Magnolia flowers are tough, to avoid damage by eating and crawling beetles.

Fossilised specimens of M. acuminata have been found dating to 20 million years ago, and of plants identifiably belonging to the Magnoliaceae dating to 95 million years ago.

Hi Martyn,
Very appropriate image to upload on the first day of spring. Another excellent presentation, I like where you’ve applied the desaturation. Good crop and details too, I noticed a lot of these when I was walking through the Auckland Botanic Gardens the other week. Well taken.

TFS,
Scott.
