~ The New Zealand Robin ~

Here are a few details on this bird for all you ornithologists on TrekLens...

Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Chordata
Class: Aves
Family: Eopsaltriidae
Genera: Petroica
Species: australis
Sub-species: longipes

The New Zealand Robin is, as the name suggests, endemic to New Zealand. They may be seen on off-shore islands (eg. Kapiti island and Great Barrier island) where their safety is secure due to removal of pests such as rats. The Robin may also be seen across the mainland of North Island from Taranaki across to the Bay of Plenty.

It measures approximately 18cm and the two sexes differ in appearance. The male is darker, almost black with a white spot above the bill and pale grey lower breast; the females are much greyer overall.

Hi Martyn

Very good sharpness on the blue eyed bird, with a nice reflection in the eye. Excellent use of a shallow dof, & well framed & composed. Tfs!

Lovely catchlight in his eye. Look at the detail in his feet, wonderful. Well captured Martyn

Bonjour Martyn.
Magnifique image animalière avec de splendides détails dans le plumage de l’oiseau.
La bonne netteté sur l’œil de l’oiseau est aussi parfaite et donne une grande valeur photographique a cette création.
Bonne journée.
Urs

Wow, it looks not at all like the N. American robin.
Fantastic detail in this one Martyn. .. great definition in all the little feathers on it's body, and also the little hairs around it's beak. Great shot.
