Maori Carving

On our travels up past the Hokianga Harbour and closer to Awanui, at the bottom of the 90-Mile-Beach, we came across this Maori carving at the entrance to a walking track that was opened by the New Zealands Prime Minister in 2003.

The signs read:

This track was opened by Tramper and Prime Minister, Helen Clark
Te Araroa – April 5 2003
Ocean to Ocean Route

Ko Taunaha Te Rangatira
Ko Orawhana Te Maunga
Ko Rangiheke Te Awa
Ko Rangitukituki Te Pa
Ko Te Arai Te Kuaha
Ko Te Araroa Te Huaratu
Kainga Imi Hoapu Roto i Te Kainga o Manukau

Taunaha is the Paramount Leader
Orawhana is the Mountain
Rangiheke is the River
Rangitukituki is the Stronghold
Te Arai is the Doorway
Te Araroa is the Pathway
Many are the people from Manukau.
