Ravages of Time – Number 2

This home is in Broadwood, Northland, New Zealand.

I looked up Broadwood on Google and all I could find was about backpackers, farm stays, a golf club and school, and the Broadwood Dairy, which meant Grocer, Post Office, Service Station (Petrol), all combined in one building.

I posted another picture from there last year – also called Ravages of Time

We had stopped for petrol on our way north, and I wondered around the township – all made up of one Dairy, Grocer, Post Office, Service Station all combined in one building.

The house here was on Awaroa Road, Broadwood, and the Maori gentleman looked very happy and contented reading his paper on his front porch.

This is the trouble of many of our houses in New Zealand. As the timber houses get older they begin to deteriorate, as the owners can’t afford to repaint them or keep working on them.

Enjoy part of our New Zealand culture and lifestyle. . .

Hi Janice,
A classic northland shot. Well seen, fits the title well. Pity you can't see a bit more of the man but if it were me taking this I would be shy to ask to get closer.
Karen

Hi Janice, this is a typical scene in many parts of outback (country) New Zealand.. Glad they dont paint their houses, gives us photographers something to photograph..:-).. No stress there in Broadwood!

Well done my friend.. I have added a workshop for you, hope you dont mind.. all in fun.

Cheers Dawn

Lovely shot of rural NZ and this man relaxing - with his dog snoozing at his feet! I love the details of peeling paint and cracked wood.
Beautiful work

Hi Janice,
Great shot of this old rundown old house! I love all the peeling paint and the old man sitting there happily certainly adds to the image. Certainly good for us photographers. Well done and TFS
Cheers Tina :-)

Love this old building in need of repair. The man sitting on the porch looks happy enough to just relax. Cute to see the pink Wellie. I like the effect on the colours.

Hi Janice,
Fantastic image of the this aging building and a picture in time. You've captured the crisp, vivid details of the scene with the peeling paint, weathered wood and the disrepair of the house itself...it is a shame that repairs can be so costly...I get the feeling from the photo, however, that the gentleman is quite content in his place in the world :-) Well done on the image. Cheers, Todd

Hi Janice,

Dawn is right! Places like these really stand out and beg to be photographed! (^_^) Great textures, colours and that gentleman reading the paper really adds impact to the composition!

Well done

Dear Janice
First let me thank you for sharing this fabulous image -- a wonderful combination of happy and sad. Happy because it has a wonderful relaxed air and sad because it is rather rundown.
I love the composition, the colours, the details, all remarkable in a "drive-by shooting"

Wooo.. I thought he is a "Wax" person, not knowing he is real!!! Very nice composition, I don't often take shots of houses, I think I am afraid they will yell at me...lol... well captured my friend, thanks for sharing

Cheers,
Sweety

Super shot

Apart from the elderly Maori Janice it could be any one of a number of older houses here in Launceston. We have some beautiful old homes that look like this and with the restrictions the heritage council makes not many want to spend the money for any improvements. Well composed, good colour and fine detail. TFS,
David

Great shot and the title fits. I like the elegrant aging in both the man and the home. They both look like they have been through rough weather

Hi Janice,
This is great, sort of a diary on the progression of life, the man and the house have weathered the time together. Sharp details, colors and pov, thanks for sharing,

Hello Janice!

Neat ambiance captured. The same phenomena is pretty spreaded worldwide, even here . You are giving me a few ideas for future posts (^_^). We see this here often in our outbacks too. It could have been taken in the US as well.

IMHO , I prefer the more natural colors here instead of the
workshop from Dawn ( No offense to Dawn's work here ).

Well seen !
Robert

Great capture, I like how you caught the weathered look of the house. Good POV, also with the older person sitting on the porch. Good clear sharpness. TFS

Hi Janice,
This is a great daily life shot of the Maori man relaxing on his porch. Your photo is great that it shows all the detail in the rustic building well. It is sad that people have to live in buildings that are so deteriorated. Excellent.
Cheers,
Debbie

janice,
what makes this shot more lively and meaningful is the inclusion of the human element. excellent details and the color is so natural. well done.
