Hokianga Harbour

We have been away for a few days, travelling north of Auckland and staying at Hokianga, Kerikeri and Whangarei.

We drove up the west coast also known as the Kauri Coast because of the large amount of kauri trees that grow in the Waipoua Forest, the largest tract of unmodified mature kauri forest, home to the largest living kauris: Tane Mahuta and Te Matua Ngahere.

I have come back so amazed at the amount of native bush areas we have in Northland, Bay of Islands. I was so excited even walking in the forest seeing the majestic trees: like the Rimu, Totara, Kawakawa, Manuka, Kanuka, Putaputaweta, and even the FERNS and mosses. So many and so plentiful. I just loved it. And I’ll post some of these soon…

This Lookout is Te Arai Te Uru , the outer South Head at the entrance to the Hokianga Harbour . The sandy piece of land in the distance is a giant sand dune of the North Head. Notice the shape of the Manuka growing on the cliff – see how it has been flattened by the wind as it has grown to the shape of the hill. The harbour mouth opens to the Tasman Sea.

If you look hard enough, you might just see Australia in the distance, 1200 miles away!

Hi Janice,
Lovely vista that you have captured here. Given how far they are, those waves must be huge.

Well done Jancie, such lovely soft colours in the background contrasting so well with the lush foreground.
Surfs up :)
Regards
David

Fantastic sea/landscape!! I like the movement of the sea the clouds. The bare hill adds to the feeling of movement. Truly fantastic.

Love the rich vivid colours and the compo is perfect Janice. Also the twisting path leads the eye into the shot. Beautiful spot. TFS, Paul.
