The Lighthouse at Cape Reinga was built in 1941 and first lit during May of that year.

The Cape Reinga lighthouse replaced a lighthouse located on nearby Motuopao Island, which had been built in 1879. Accessing the lighthouse was difficult due to the rough seas in the area.

In 1938 it was decided to move the lighthouse to Cape Reinga for safety reasons.

The light was fitted with a 1000 watt electrical lamp that could be seen for 26nmautical miles (48 km). The lamp was powered by a diesel generator.

In 1987 the lighthouse was fully automated and the lighthouse keepers were withdrawn.

The lighthouse is now monitored remotely from Wellington. In May of 2000 the original lens and lamp were replaced by a 50 watt beacon. The beacon is powered by batteries that are recharged by solar cells. The beacon flashes every 12 seconds and can be seen for 19 nautical miles (35km).

Cape Reinga (or Te Rerenga Wairua in Maori language) is the northwestermost tip of the Aupouri Peninsula, at the northern end of the North Island of New Zealand.

From the lighthouse it is possible to watch the tidal race as the Tasman Sea and the Pacific Ocean clash to create unsettled waters just off the coast.

Thanks for taking a look…inspired to post this because of John Tulips latest post of his lighthouse…my photo was taken before I joined Treklens.

Hi Dawn
I like these superb colors and the composition with the light house opening to the infinite sea. Very well done.
Kind regards.
Luc

Very nice clear photo of a great composition. Colors and lighting are great.
TFS, Niek

Excellent photo Dawn, well composed. Beautiful colourings and another NZ view to die for. Dear little lighthouse. I believe further downriver from Launceston there are two just like this which were used to enable shipping to line up the main channel. TFS

PS Many thanks for your comment on High and Dry
I was trying to think what that circular mark would have been. I went back through the photos I took that morning and realised that there was a chap out in his dinghy checking his crab pots. The marking of the water is when he veered away.

OH boy! I love lighthouses! This one is spectacular...great colors, dof and pov...TFS,
Fran

Hello Dawn !

Your lighthouse photo definitely can not be missed .

It was about noon when you took this one, looking at the very short shadows. Excellent framing and colors. Can not get better then this.
Robert

dawn,
good pov. nice color and detail , nice blue color.

Hi Dawn,
You're right, compared to John Tulip's lighthouse, yours is a stubby one..LOL.... Kinda reminds me of 'mini me' from the movie Austin Powers :)
Anyway, lovely POV & DOF. The colours of the sky, sea & grass are crisp & vibrant!
Beautifully composed & presented!

Costas
ps. I don't see no Bronzed Birds anywhere (*_^)

Hi Dawn,

Oh my, it's been years since I have been to the cape (Used to camp at Spirits Bay when we were kids) Tis a very beautiful place (and an ideal spot for a lighthouse) as is your photo of this scene. Very well captured and presented as usual.

Hi Dawn,

This is beautiful as are many of your pictures ( just had a look around your gallery, I must add you as a favourite so I don't forget to visit you in future (there done :)

This shot reminds me of "Lands End" in Cornwall, We can look out at a vast sea also, I like the composition although the lighthouse looks a tad central for me. I can see though that you wanted to include the visitors which does add to the atmosphere here. Well done Dawn!

John
