Paihia, Bay of Islands

Maori place name: Good here.
It is believed to be a word of mixed origin, pai (good), hia (may be here).

Paihia
is the main tourist town in the beautiful Bay of Islands in the far north of the North Island of New Zealand. It is located close to the historic towns of Russell, and Kerikeri, and is only 60 kilometres north of Whangarei.

The Bay of Islands is the finest maritime park in New Zealand with the 144 Islands and secluded bays. The Bay has an abundance of marine life, including the big marlin, whales, penguins, dolphins, gannets and many other species.

The Bay with its pristine natural environment is the gathering place in the South Pacific for overseas sailing yachts on world cruises, international sport fishermen, golfers and marine enthusiasts.

This was the view of Paihia as we were leaving there last December when we took my cousin and her husband from England on holiday up Northland. We had spent a few nights in Paihia on the way back from holidaying further west and north. We had done many of the touristy things you MUST do up there – like catching a boat out to the Hole in the Rock and seeing the dolphins swimming around the boat as well. We visited Russell and Waitangi too.

We saw this Maori canoe anchored off shore and had to stop for a photo. It’s a scene we don’t often see, and looking at this photo I think back to how it must have looked around 200 years ago when the White Man / Pakeha first visited these shores.

Beautiful saturation and contrast in this shot Janice, and what a lucky opportunity to see the waka anchored near the shore! Nice composition, good placement of that precisely-level horizon.
Great shot!

Lovely mood. It looks so tranquil and the solitary boat that adds that special something to makes it great. Lovely image.

Hi Janice,
This is so peaceful, it would be wonderful to lay back in the canoe and drift on the calm waters. Great contrasts, colors and composition, thanks for sharing,
Fran

I have the feeling that the last sun ray’s reaching the beach.
A meditate place
