Hundertwasser Toilets -
Hundertwasser's Ultimate Stand

Please look at the workshop to see what the building looks like from outside.

This is one of the walls in Hundertwasser's Ultimate Stand – the Public Loos in Kawakawa.

Friedensreich Hundertwasser (December 15, 1928 – February 19, 2000) was an Austrian Internationally renown artist, architect and sculptor. By the end of the 20th century, he was arguably the best-known living Austrian artist, though he was always controversial.

When you pass through Kawakawa in the Bay of Islands, New Zealand, you MUST stop here. Even if you want to go to the toilet / loo / lavatory / whatever you call it, you must stop and look at it!!!

Frederick Hundertwasser could never have dreamed of the impact he was going to have on a small, rural community when he made New Zealand his second home in the 1970’s.

In 1998 the Kawakawa Community Board was looking to upgrade 40-year-old toilet facilities in the central township, and Hundertwasser offered a solution from his design palate.

His concept was adopted and the artist personally lending a hand in construction supervision, including the provision of materials from his own studio.

In consultation with the Bay of Islands College, students prepared ceramic tiles which have been used throughout the building. The bricks used came from a former Bank of New Zealand building, and both young and old from the local community volunteered services to the construction process.

The finished product is a work of art, from the grass roof, to gold balls, ceramic tiles, bottle glass windows, mosaic tiling, copper handwork, cobblestone flooring, individual sculptures and a living tree integrated into the design structure.

With the untimely death of the Austrian-born artist in February 2000, the building is the only Hundertwasser structure in the Southern Hemisphere, and the last major project ever undertaken by the famous artist and designer.

It will remain as both a memorial to Frederick Hundertwasser and a very functional building for the community and visitors alike.

Hi Janice,
Hundertwasser is one of my favourite artists.
I have had the book 'Hundertwassaer' (by Harry Rand) out of the library many times.
My friend John Moore knew him well and helped him build his very first Eco-House in New Zealand. John also has an amazing house that he built nect door to us in Pirongia, and it has two large stained glass windows by Fred.
I've never actually seen this loo exept in photos and on TV.
A great capture of it.
I guess you were somewhat reticent about taking your camera into the mens urinal?
It is suppossed to be the highlight.

Cheers,
Steve

The colours and shapes in this are beautifully captured and presented here.
What a wry bit of humour in all of this though!
Superb posting

Hi Janice, I think it would put a few people off their main reason for stopping there :). I wonder if the staid coucil here would consider something like that. I love it! Two good images to display this gents artwork. Good colour and lovely detail. TFS,
David
