Omaha Sand Dunes

Humans are very clever at finding technical solutions to environmental problems but they seldom remove the causes of such problems. When trying to protect the land from the sea, they underestimate how powerful the sea can be, because large storms do not occur often enough. Here are a number of ways humans protect the coast and also the reasons why these solutions cause other problems.

Omaha has many problems with erosion on the beach and the councils and have tried many different ways to fix it.

Today the beach and dune system are very stable and although they are always changing, like any ocean beach, many winter storms have been weathered. This is testimony to the amazing engineering feat that the groyne structure put in place. You can see some of the stony groynes in this photo.

Residents and ratepayers, as well as visitors are far more aware how important the dunes are to the stability of the beach, and there is even a foreshore protection society set up by residents to assist this process.

Omaha beach has now become one of the most desirable beach locations in the north island. Some of the rich and famous have built magnificent beach houses here. Not a little 1 or 2 bedroom bach / cottage as in days gone by. But large mansions, that are closed for many months of the year.

Pam, Dawn and I drove around the area. We loved the beach, but we were happy to go back home to our own homes...

Well, with that lovely green hill in the background, at least we know it isn't snow :D
Excellent notes to go along with a fine piece of photojournalism.
