The Quiet Before the Storm

This is Opua in the Bay of Islands, New Zealand.

We’ve just come back from a short holiday in Paihia, in the Bay of Islands, 220kms ‘up north’ from home, and we arrived the day before a Tropical Cyclone came bringing heavy rains and strong winds.

This is the view of some of the boats moored at Opua, 4 kms from Paihia. The weather was so very still and quiet – it definitively was the quiet before the storm.

We had noticed the difference in the colour of the sky as we drove north. And here at Opua and looking into the sun, the colours were so gold with the sun shining very faintly through the clouds.

About 12 hours later at 3am, the storm arrived. We had been given candles and matches and the Civil Defence warned us of many things that could happen - fortunately nothing did go wrong for us!!

We didn't lose our power, and we read books, watched TV and ate all our snacks, and felt very cosy in our rooms.

But we drove home today, a couple of days earlier than planned because Tropical Cyclone number 2 is expected to arrive overnight. We thought it best to get home to check out if there was any damage done on our house from the first storm - thankfully it was quite safe, apart from a BIG mess from the Pohutukawa trees dropping lots of debris all over the section.

Hi Janice, Certainly the calm before the storm with the stillness and unusual sky colour. You have portrayed it well. We did OK here but are waiting to see what this storm brings second time around... now we should be out there with those cameras! LOLs
Cheers, Pat.

Hi Janice,

Indeed, just before a storm the sky can get that special light quality and here it then slowly changes to a sort of faint greenish hue - that is what is happening right now, so I suppose a thunderstorm can break any minute - already closed the windows in the attic.

The quietness of nature is also something that you can feel - and if the birds stop singing then a really big storm is coming.

What a cool & relaxing place!
You have portrayed it well. Well done.

Excellent depth. Beautiful landscape.

Funny how that brown look accompanies storms Janice, happy to hear that you and your house are safe at least. Nice tones in the image and the seas show the beginnings of the swell.

The textures in this are the first thing that capture me -- but your notes make the calm even more ominous.
Great posting
