Red-billed gull
Larus Novaehollandiae
Maori Name: Tarapunga

This is a native New Zealand Red-billed gull that I saw up at Paihia, Northland, last week, the day before the first big storm hit the country.

He was down at the wharf where all the tourist boats leave from to go out through the Bay of Islands to see the dolphins and the Hole in the Rock. I guess he was wondering why it was so still and that no tourists were wanting to get out sightseeing.

HI Janice
Wondering if he will eat today with no tourists around to feed him, or will he have to go to work to fill his bill.
A very nice clear shot with good coloring.

The colours in this make it really stunning, Janice!
Superb close PoV and composition and the details are wonderful.
I will bet he was hoping for a handout just like any other gull :)

WOW! The detail could not be better!!! Amazing!! Excellent colors. He's posed so nicely! TFS and have a happy day!

Familiar bird all over the world! (Maybe the colours of the legs and beak may vary). (I saw sea-gulls at the Sevan Lake in Armenia, too!) In Sweden poor people are disturbed by the sound of the sea gulls (I love it and use to give them fish-left-overs when I have!) People demand that the police should shoot the sea gulls. Poor birdies! People also complain about church bells, dogs barking, cocks cock-a-doodle-doos and you name it! Something I hate is the sound of the grasscutting machines. I would like a law which demands people to have a goat or a donkey in their garden instead, or everybody should have to cut their grass at the same time.
Sweden is warm at the moment and I am home again from Caucasia. Very interesting and so near Sweden!
Lovely photo btw!

They are the same the world over Janice..in many parts of England they dive and take the food from your hand, I heard a story of a young girls icecream being plucked from her hand from a sea gull...lol poor girl!
