Hundertwasser Toilets -
Hundertwasser's Ultimate Stand-
The Entrance way to the Public Loos in Kawakawa, Bay of Island, New Zealand.

Guys to the left / Gals to the right

Friedensreich Hundertwasser (December 15, 1928 – February 19, 2000) was an Austrian Internationally renown artist, architect and sculptor. By the end of the 20th century, he was arguably the best-known living Austrian artist, though he was always controversial.

When you pass through Kawakawa in the Bay of Islands, New Zealand, you MUST stop here. Even if you want to go to the toilet / loo / lavatory / whatever you call it, you must stop and look at it!!!

Frederick Hundertwasser could never have dreamed of the impact he was going to have on a small, rural community when he made New Zealand his second home in the 1970’s.

In 1998 the Kawakawa Community Board was looking to upgrade 40-year-old toilet facilities in the central township, and Hundertwasser offered a solution from his design palate.

In consultation with the Bay of Islands College, students prepared ceramic tiles which have been used throughout the building. The bricks used came from a former Bank of New Zealand building, and both young and old from the local community volunteered services to the construction process.

The finished product is a work of art, from the grass roof, to gold balls, ceramic tiles, bottle glass windows, mosaic tiling, copper handwork, cobblestone flooring, individual sculptures and a living tree integrated into the design structure.

With the untimely death of the Austrian-born artist in February 2000, the building is the only Hundertwasser structure in the Southern Hemisphere, and the last major project ever undertaken by the famous artist and designer.

It will remain as both a memorial to Frederick Hundertwasser and a very functional building for the community and visitors alike.

Hi Janice,
Did you post some Hundertwasser a long time ago .. I seem to remember some before.
I've been a fan of Hundertwasser for years.
My next door neighbour in Pirongia was a good friend of his and helped him build his first 'Eco-house' here in NZ
He also had a couple of his stained glass windows in his house at Pirongia.
I think Hundertwasser actually built a few experimental eco-homes here in NZ but I don't think they are open to the public,so are probably not acknowledged as such.
Great shot of the cool loos at Kawakawa.
Cheers
Steve

I seem to recall Pete showing us these 'dunnies' Janice. Well captured and the colours almost luminous.

A very colourful work of art, Janice... I like it. I'd definitely stop and admire it, shoot it even, before hurrying on to do whatever it is I came there for.
Lighting is well handled. Did you use the built-in flash or an external one?
