Hi Nico,
I do like the composition of the people but I would have tried some different things.
Please do not take this as a tearing apart of your shot but view this as more of an observation.
My option for this scene:
Get the shot with the setting sun slightly higher and take a reading from the brighter sky (depending on the conditions). This would create a sihlouette(sp?) effect with your group in the foreground. I would opt for this as there is a conflict of theme for me with this - the sky would be the thing I would want to emphasize unless the backs of peoples heads are your thing.
If you crop the foreground a bit it takes the focus off of their shoes and raises the viewers POV as well. If you get the chance to get this sort of shot again try taking it without the flash.
I am by no means what you would call a pro-photographer and my comments are based around my taste rather than any knowledge of technical rules etc.
Hope this makes sense.
All the best with the joy you will get from photography.
Ray.
