From six kilometres up, on the flight home from Christchurch to Auckland, a shot of Mount Taranaki (aka Egmont.)

I could post a big Wiki reference here about Taranaki - iconic landmark, sacred mountain, and body-double for Mt Fuji in The Last Samurai - but I'll let you go see the reference yourself, if you're interested.

Why did I choose to post this version over the bigger view in the workshop? I like the sense of immensity, the way something as imposing and vast as a mountain can appear so small. Everything comes down to perspective, and from the right vantage point, even the whole Earth is just a dot of bluish light.

PP - colour correction and contrast to remove some of the hazy blue.

Hi Rew
Yeah I see your point,
The mountain blends easily into the cloud, and as you say, something so imposing can seem not as formidable in the bigger picture.
I love this, and having looked at your workshop, the mountain looks as though it is actually floating!
Regards
Philippa

Taking shots through two layers of glass is never easy and you have managed to avoid the tell tale glare or reflection that is sometimes apparent with plane shots. The clouds are very impressive and the positioning of Taranaki adds to the scale of the scene. A different genre for you Rew.
I like it.

Hi Rew,
Yes,it is amazing how small this huge mountain looks among the vast expanse of clouds.
When I was about 15 a friend and I climbedto the top in only a t shirt and nylon trousers (no spare jersey, parka or food at all)
... We must have been crazy, or just really really dumb.
Excellent shot.
Cheers
Steve

Very good capture of this majestic volcano. Good exposure and detail is sharp. I like the lighting on the clouds too. TFS.

cheers,

Martyn

Good morning Rew,
bravo for this shoot, impressive work!!!
I give you the green star :)!!

Igor

Well done Rew, I do like the sky, indigo blue through to the fluffy white tops of the clouds. This would make a stunning poster for the travel industry. Lots of space for captions.
Cheers,
Pete.
PS; did they circle the mountain for you, or are you just super quick at changing lenses????

He Rew,

very very nice shot. Technicaly perfect, composition perfect, great colour... Gratulatiuon. tfs. Stev

Awe inspiring image! I feel like flying just to see this look at the top! Great image to display!

Jeruel

Yep, I like this one the best. The vast sea of clouds and the mountain just peeking through is perfect composition in my opinion.

Cheers

Hello Rew !

Congratulations. Both images are simply superb. the composition here is indeed more spectacular with the immensity of the cloud coverage and the open space.

The workshop is still stunning in quality and sharpness!

Bravo!

Rew,
I didn't notice the top of that mountain on the thumbnail. I prefer this one than the one on workshop. I admire the composition - so simple yet very meaningful. Photography indeed is an extension of one's mind/personality. Glad we have you here!
Adrian

Hi Rew,

This is an amazing shot, it is one you have to look twice at, I think you made the right choice on this one altough both are stunning.

Cheers

Hello Rew,
A beautiful picture, great work from the airplane. I know how hard is to take so great picture, I congrats you!
Excelent POV, colors and compo. Thanks!
Mihaela

Wow! I love the mountain top peaking over the clouds. amazing shot! Great blue sky above the puffy clouds
well done,
Shelby

Hi Rew, A bit emotive as i was born and spent 20 years living under these clouds. I enjoy aerial photographs and this shows a typical Taranaki day. The saying is that if you can't see the summit it is raining, and if you can it will rain tomorrow! They get the last laugh though, i suspect when other places suffer drought, thos around here will be enjoying Taranaki sunshine, as the rain is known locally. TFS. Murray.

Hi Rew,
Great POV! As you say something so immense seeming so small. Like the tip of an iceberg.
Well done and TFS.
Cheers, Pat.
Thank you for your comment on Diwali Dancers.

Hi Rew!
Incredible a snowy peak is longing amongst the sea of clouds.
Congrats

traveling to new zealand this winter to see the real thing. Im warming up with views like this one. really beautiful

Hi Rew,
After reviewing your workshop photo, IMO, I think the original is much better. It really gives you the sense of being very high above the mountian. I love the way you composed this shot too. The way the sky looks at altitude is exactly how your photo is. Deep, deep blue, almost black then it slowly turns to what we recognize as the sky, then the haze of the atmosphere then clouds. This photo gives you a sense of being perched high above everything.

Love your work,

Darren

Hi Rew,
WOW! How is it possible to take such an amazing shot? This is incredible. I was immediately struck by the shades of blue coming down the image. I don't really know if I like the original better or not- they are both very well done.
Sarah

Hello Rew,
WOW!!! This is stunning! Excellent colours and superb details. The view itself is magnificent. Well seen & captured, congratulations!

Hi Rew,
Fantastic shot of the snowy volcano, the clouds and the dark blue sky. Awesome work, excellent composition, wonderful colors. Nothing's overexposed - You handle Your new camera and lenses very well. I like both the original and the WS. Congrats and tfs. Regards from Hungary, László

Hi Rew

Loved your shot as I too take lot of aerial shots whenever i'm flying.

Your reasoning are great....though my suggestion would have been a flatter angle giving deeper perspective of the Mount Taranaki which would have reduced the otherwise bigger sky area.

bye
