[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This heron was sunning himself on the banks of the Waikato River at Mercer this afternoon.

I got a few good shots of him, when in a flash he took off.
I know I missed his wing tips, but I still like this one.
I know I won't get another opportunity like this again...at least for a while.

Self introduced from Australia the White-faced Heron is now the most common heron having benefitted from the widespread conversion of forest to farmland.

This slim bluish-grey heron has a white face, chin and upper throat, and a black bill and greenish-yellow legs. Strap-shaped plumes are long and pale grey on the back and short and pinkish brown on the chest. The call is a guttural croak.

The diet is fish, frogs and tadpoles, aquatic and pasture insects, spiders, earthworms and mice.

Breeding is between June and February with the peak about October. The nest is an untidy bundle of sticks and twigs usually high up in large trees. Both adults incubate for about 26 days and usually 2 chicks are raised and fed by both parents.

Hi Pete, caught him just at the right moment, nice and sharp I don't think the wingtips detract from it being a great job.

Cheers
Gil

Yes, you missed his wing tips, but the rest of the bird looks great. I love how he is on his toes pushing up for the lift-off. Those wings are so large - well done Pete
