~ Castlepoint Lagoon ~
This is the impressive natural lagoon located at Castlepoint in the Wairarapa. I climbed the nearby coastal mountain to take in this spectacular vista. The sea is notoriously rough and dangerous along this Pacific coastline, many lives have been lost from being swept off the rocks by huge waves while fishing.
The inherent danger that is well sign-posted in and around these shores does nothing to detract visitors (just like me) from getting a close look at nature’s beauty and awesome energy.

Castlepoint, which was so-named by Captain Cook in 1770 because he thought the Castle Rock looked like the foundations of a castle, isn’t just a scenic attraction but also has some interesting history attached to it relating to the iconic lighthouse. This lighthouse was constructed in 1913 and is still functional. Over the decades it has had many keepers, in 1988 it was automated. Another reason for visiting the Castlepoint Scenic Reserve is the presence of a rare shrubby Castlepoint daisy (syn. Brachyglottis compactus) which is endemic to these rocky limestone cliffs.
I have visited Castlepoint a few times and taken many photos, some of which I have previously posted on Treklens.

Hi Martyn,
A beautiful seascape with a nice beach and a lighthouse!
Favulous lighting and good focusing are adorning the capture .
A wonderful agitation in the sea leaving a nice surf with the rocks.
A good bird's eye view of this perspective with ample DOF.

Excellent looking place, you've done it justice with this shot. Good POV, the lighthouse is nicely composed - very straight horizon too. Love the various tones of the sea in this one, the people in the distance really put things into perspective.
