I took this shot a few weeks ago from below the Okahu pier near Mission Bay in Auckland. The pier was closed for maintenance at the time, so instead of it being a wasted trip out there, I thought I’d slide down the rocky bank and take some photos looking out to across the Waitemata Harbour. I stood on an old concrete sewerage pipe to get a slightly elevated view, and also so I didn’t get my feet wet.

I quite liked how you can see the dark volcanic rocks below the sea during high tide. You can see Rangitoto Island in the distance to the right. The Sky Tower was just out of sight on the left hand side.

Okahu Bay is situated on the well-known Tamaki Drive, and was the site of Governor Hobsons visit to Auckland in 1841. It’s a white sand beach that stretches around part of the coastline and is suitable for children to swim at. Across the road is a reserve with a small playground and lots of room for running around, or take the family to Kelly Tarltons Underwater World and make a day of it.

I’m looking forward to returning to this pier at night-time when the lights are on, or even at sunset. Would be a nice spot to go fishing on a sunny day too. It's maintenance should all be finished by now, so the pier will be open to the public.

impressive HDR work Scott!love the composition too... a quality work my friend... TFS

A very interesting capture with great details and colours. The contrasts are perfect. I especially like the very clear water and the stones visible through it. The clouds are somehow dramatic and put a lot of emphasize to the sky.
Well seen and taken. Thanks for sharing.
Kindest regards, Britta

Hi Scott,

Superb capture of the bay with fabulous colors and great clarity! I like the bluish-green tones in the water with a such a great never ending view of the bridge, prompting the viewer to go deep into this fabulous work.

Well seen, my friend!

best regards,
Paras

Hi Scott

Remarkable HDR via 3 RAW pictures. It shows how much you've finished it speedy.
Crystal clear water is well captured in addition to submerged black rocks
The color tonality and details are fantastic

Hello Scott, excellent use of perspective with the pier pointing towards the island.
I agree with you that the rocks underneath the water add an interesting effect.
Beautiful colours of the sky and the sea.
Tfs, regards Jean.

Hi Scott,

This is a really nice and natural hdr the bridge seems to go all the way to the other side and pulls the eyes nicely into the picture.

Great colours and sharp details good dof also well done.

Hello Scott
This is beautiful, excellent HDR results.
I particularly like the white leads inn of bridge which leads to the thirds showing a strong composition.

I would recommend u taking single long exposure to have smoky effects of water then convert three exposures for single raw and merge it in ur HDR software may be it'll be more impactfull for u :)

TFS
Cheers

Hello, Scott -
Really impressive image. On of the hallmarks of your photos is the incredible sharpness you achieve; this one is a great example. The POV is great - the pier leads the eye through the frame, and along the way we see the mottled patterns beneath the water's surface and the dramatic sky. The combination of images creates a perfect overall exposure. Excellent work.

Hello,
wonderfull view, fantastic water effect, great details and colors

Hello Scott,
On a rainy day in Wash D.C. and as I get ready for work, your posted image makes a fine viewing and at least gives me a glimpse of brighter conditions. Love those clouds. Although your processing is faultless and resulted in a natural-looking image, the hint of Photomatix use is still evident to my eyes. Sharp as evidenced by the crisp barnacles on the supporting poles. Cheers
Danilo

Hi Scott,

I like the HDR effect you've achieved here, very moody (especially the clouds). The bridge runs right along the upper third division in this well composed shot. I'm glad you explained the dark spots in the water, at first I thought that they might have been cloud shadows. TFS

Best regards,
Werner

Hi Scott,
Almost monochromic, this photo pleases me with its very great range of blue variations!
The bridge is a good lead between sky and sea.
Very good management of the HDR technic!
Bravo! Annie

Hi Scott

beautiful clouds ,this looks amazing in the day time ,I like how the
sea has capture the dark rocks below.
Very nice colours and sharpness well done Scott.

WOW...amazing shot. If I lived here, I would be in the water 24-7, you can bet on it! My skin would be wrinkled all the time! I love the broad perspective look here, the muted colors are nice, but wondering what they REALLY look like! Oh it would just make me more jealous! HAHA! Always, your work is dramatic and interesting!
B-)
Linda

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say this isn't my favourite of yours.

You do great work with the multi-exposure techniques but something about this one isn't quite working. I find the colours feel quite greyish and subdued, and there are patches of light/dark through that sky that make it feel too heavily processed - for my taste, at least.

Compositionally good, with the 1:2 ratio of sky to water, and the diagonal of the pier, but really given that it's a sunny day I would have hoped to see brighter highlights and deeper shadows - more dynamic range, rather than less.

Just my thoughts, as always your work has proved very popular so my opinion is of little consequence! ;)

Rew

Hello Scott,

hi Scott,
whole tone of silver color is beautiful,
fore gray/black pattern in/on the water and back deep blue/white pattern of the sky/cloud is strangely contrasted well and it makes splendid atmospheric perspective,
of course the bridge and island look so fine, it makes nice depth feeling as not actual but illusionary bridge in this view.
thank you,
Akihisa

Beautiful colours excellent pov and composition Very nice as always Good job
warm regards

Hello Scott! Amazing pier, wonderful sky and clouds. Excellent POV and composition. Great exposure. Original shot. Well done!

Hello Scott,

Wow, this makes your trip really worthwhile!
A fine viewpoint where the pier leads sharply into the bay, towards the distant hill and creates a good sense of perspective.
The colour contrasts between the sea and the sky are a strong feature of the shot, whilst the clouds and rocks create a sense of unity, of similarity.

Have a good day,
Bev :-)

Hi Scott, Very effective strong diagonal shape of this long pier makes a powerful image. The very different colours between sky and sea are interesting and the water has a somewhat surreal look to it, maybe from the water flowing. Good work. TFS. Murray.

Bonjour Scott,

Encore du très beau travail sur ce joli clihé de ce pont s'étendant à l'infini!!!
