~ A Tender Moment ~

I took this light-hearted photo of these two monkeys during a visit to Christchurch zoo a couple of years past. Their antics had everyone laughing. I couldn’t resist taking their photo.

The Spider Monkey belongs to the genus Ateles and family Atelidae. Their typical habitats are the tropical rain forests of Central America to Brazil.

Like so many animals nowadays, their natural habitat is continually under threat by man who destroys it and claims it for agriculture and housing development.

Another handicap for this species is its slow reproduction rate, adding to the continuing risk of extinction of this monkey.
