Maori Culture

| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
This is a Māori carving taken from inside a marae while I was staying there.
Māori culture is a big part of New Zealand and the Māori language is now one of our offical languages.
******************************************************
Wikipedia
In Māori society, the marae is a place where the culture can be celebrated, where the Māori language can be spoken, where intertribal obligations can be met, where customs can be explored and debated, where family occasions such as weddings and birthdays can be held, and where important ceremonies, such as welcoming visitors or farewelling the dead (tangihanga), can be performed. Like the related institutions of old Polynesia, the marae is a wāhi tapu, a 'sacred place' which carries great cultural meaning.

Hi Tracey, I was thinking of Maori carvings too, but teh Marmite caught my eye...
You are right - Māori culture is a big part of the way of life in NZ.
This is a nicely painted Maori carving

Hello Tracey,
I love the art of native peoples.
This is a fine example and thank you for the interesting notes.
I like the close crop which dirests the attention firmly on the art.
I would have like the eyes to be a little stronger (poetic licence!)
I have a done a little w/s for you, not because it is better, just a different view. I hope you like it.
Have a good day,
Bev :-)

Hi Tracey,
The central composition works well here, but the lighting is a little flat.
Your workshop image has a much better 3D look to it, and shows more detail.
I know it's hard to decide sometimes, and it's only after posting that you realise....oh bother!
As they say hindsight is 20/20 vision.
If you try the shot again, see if you can bounce the flash sideways onto a reflector.
The side lighting will give the carving much more relief.
Pete.
