I took Danni into town so we could get her bus pass card.
On the walk from where we had parked the car I stopped, thinking about a story I was told when younger. We were told that if Antartica was to melt, the water would rise to the top of Christchurch Catheral. At the time I was told this, the catheral was then the tallest building in Christchurch...as you can now see it has been over shadowed by surrounding buildings :)
The catheral is the green sphere you see behind the tram.
The Christchurch tram has alot of history behind it.

Christchurch Tramway History
Trams were introduced to Christchurch in 1880. Originally a practical form of public transport, the first trams were horse-drawn, but these were soon replaced by (slightly) cleaner and more predictable steam trams.

Finally, in 1905, the new electric trams were introduced, ushering in a half century of stately city transport. Tram lines ran from the city centre as far as Papanui and New Brighton. There were even several double-decker trams imported from the USA. Special hill trams ran between Papanui and the Cashmere Hills. These were adapted by having much sturdier brakes.

Many of the trams were made locally, by Boon and Co., a Christchurch company. Only some of the present Christchurch trams originated in Christchurch – others come from as far away as Dunedin and even Melbourne, where trams are still a vital part of the central city public transport system.

Sadly, as the city became larger and the suburbs extended, the trams were all gradually retired and replaced by quicker and more versatile diesel buses. The last municipal trams stopped running in 1954. Up until that time they had carried a total of 1,605,932,516 passengers around the city.

Trams were restored to Christchurch as a visitor attraction in 1995, as the result of the joint efforts of the Tramway Historical Society, the Christchurch City Council and Christchurch Tramway Ltd. Wood Scenic Line Ltd took over the ownership and management of the tramways in 2005.

PS, there will be some photos from the top of the catheral later.
Danni (aka waterlilygirl) has one in this theme, taken on the same outing. :)

Hi Terry,
Funny to see an image of a place were I was a week ago and meanwhile on the other side of the globe.
Excellent shot of the tram in a nice perspective. Fine colours and an interesting composition with the Cathedral in the background. Great posting for the theme.
Hans

Hi Tracey,
Nice point of view, nice to see the tramlines behind the tram. It ties all the elements together. I could be wrong, but 244 looks to be an old Melbourne tram.

I though you did a very good job of the photo restoration, well done.
Pete.

Hi Tracey
A history lesson for us and a pleasant image too.
Well composed, natural colours and sharp details too,
TFS

hi Terry
nice shot this good pov and well presented i am looking forward to the trams getting back in Edinburgh tfs
regards bryan

Hello Tracey,a good PoV.But you had better be careful and move out of the way,you don't want to get run over!
I do like the details of the street with the church in the bg.
Your notes make interesting reading.
Tfs, regards Jean.

Nice, simple, singleminded capture of this tram. Good use of the tracks' lead-in from the lower left corner. You could probably have cropped a bunch from the upper right to bring more of the tram and less of the surrounding buildings.

Hello Tracey,

The tracks lead nicely into the shot with the illusion of the tram moving towards us!
Good textural details of the walkway in the f/g.
Probably more emphasis would be on the tram with a tighter b/g crop.

Kind regards,
Bev :-)
